Title: 2.3 Turbo swap in 73...
Post by: 73pintogeek on August 21, 2005, 04:34:44 PM
Hey all...I`m new to the realm here...and must say I visit daily and enjoy it!
Now the question...I want to do a 2.3 Turbo swap in my 73 and have heard different storie`s...it has a 2.0 Auto...is that a c-3 or c-4? And will it work with a 2.3 out of an early 80`s T-Bird?  Any help will be appreciated... ???
Thank`s...Rex    paintmeister1@yahoo.com

Hey  73pintogeek,
If you are planning a T-swap in the Pinto that is in your avitar?
It looks great STOCK.
Leave it alone.
Not too many original Pintos left.
Maybe it just looks stock?
Has your Pinto ben repainted?

I have a 71 sedan that I'm looking to do the same thing with. I have the drivetrain out of an 86 Cougar XR-7, EFI Turbo. However the sedan is in moderately rough shape.
I would agree with Pintony judging from your picture.

Hello 73pintogeek,
A 1973 Pinto will have a C-4 tranny. The C3 did not get put into the Ford Pinto untill later...
1975? 76?????

Another point to consider is the difference between the bolt patterns on the engines, 2000 / 2300. The top two bolts on the 2300 are higher and narrower than those of the 2000. The locating pins on the 2300 engine are also larger that those of the 2000.  I've done the bellhousing conversion on a manual tranny, don't know if it would work with an auto. You may want to consider using the unit out of the T-Bird.

Hello Group Sounds like there is some confusion???
The 2.3 and the early 2.0 "Not Ranger' have the same exact bellhouse bolt pattern on the blocks.
The C-3 and T5 use the top 2 bolts to bolt to the cylinder head.
I have a 72 W/C4 tranny and a 74 W/c4 tranny exact same bellhouse bolt pattern.
EXCEPT for the locating dowels. I think the dowels on the 2.3 are BIGGER.
A custom made dowel or drilling the bell is necessary to use the early C-4 bell on the 2.3
The Hummer 4speed installed in any Pinto will bolt directly to any 2.0 or 2.3.
There MAY be a dowel problem there too I'm not sure.

I've read the dowel thing on here once before Pintony so you're not an idiot (far from it actually) I'm thinking the 2.3 dowels need turned down to fit the 2.0 trans.
As for me I've found that thinking can be a DANGEROUS pastime!

Hello Group and UltimatePinto,
Please consider my apology.
My above remarks are aimed towards myself not other members of this forum.
I am the first to admit that I know little about the post 1973 Pinto and was merely welcoming
comments-corrections about what I had said.
I am sorry if I have offended other members here.
I was not trying to call anyone stupid.
Just ME if my description was off.
I'm learning stuff here too.

Hey, we all know none of us needs to make anything more out of anything. We have too many projects already.

I have a c-4 2.0 bell and a 2.3 (or 4) kicking around the house. If this is still a question, let me know.

Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm just messing around. Please do not take anything I type too personal.
My wife always says that "I am" the only one who thinks "I am" funny. :P
I'll try to keep things more professional.

Hi Pintony,

No problem, as Bill mentioned above we all have projects to get on with. Pretty soon it's going to be snowing, (for most of us in the north), and we all will be hunkered down in our shops, kicking the wood stove or furnace, and considering the next facet of our operation.
Let's hope Mr. Murphy, (Murphy's Law: If something can/can't go wrong, it will), will not be out there playing his tricks as we contonue our labors of love.
Come spring, Jane & Joe Public will be out there again at the car shows. It's up to us to give the pleasure of Deja-vu when they see once again one of THE most fun to drive vehicles the Ford Motor Company ever produced. ;D
It's snowed already in our northwest hills here in Ct. :'(
