new project about to start.doing turbo swap in a 76 mustang ii with the motor from a 87 turbo coupe. i have the turbo coupe harness and a merkur harness.i know the mmerkur harness is a standalone but it plugs in on the driver side by the strut tower will i need that section also. i have a c4 from behind a 2.3 and also a t5 which would be better? any input will be appreciated.already has a 8 inch rear end and probably gonna upgrade to a hx35 turbo
Hi, always great to see a new project getting started. My two cents, the T5 is by far the most popular as it's really fun to spool up and then blow off boost with every shift. Nothing transmits the thrill of boost like a manual transmission. The T5 will last forever and you get overdrive. The C4 is best if you need to handle a pumped up turbo in a drag racing setting. Having run them both, and like them both, I currently run the third (least popular) option, the A4LD on a stand alone platform. For my medium HP (225 - 250) Pinto, it comes off the line very hard with a 2800 stall, holds boost through gear changes, has overdrive and a lock up torque converter. Have fun building !
Welcome back crazed! Have not heard from you in a while. Everything you asked about is on the search forum, so dig in and don't stay gone so long.
thanks dick. i moved so had to hunt down my laptop because its the only way i can access my profile on here since i cant rememeber my password to log on on my phone
Which T-5 ? Make sure you get the non-hydraulic clutch set up or have the complete set up.. IE master cylinder and slave...
i have pretty much any t5 i could use 4,6,or v8. hydraulic or cable. ford or chevy. just trying which would be a better trans behind the turbo engine
T5, as an automatic plus turbo lag would not be fun till you were able to get good boost / speed in a street / strip Pinto.
A T-5 from a 2.3 would be the easiest from the mechanical stand point. If you want to fit it into a Pinto I would get a different tail shaft housing to move the shifter foward..
what do you mean d.r.
The T-5 in the stock location will require making the hole for the shiftier larger and in most cases move it forward closer to the dash .. Some people have found that using the an S-10 tail shaft housing and the speedo gear assembly from the Ford T-5 to create a shorter transmission that can use your speedo system without changing the floor boards .. Some people on TurboFord have done it or you can do a search.
http://www.turboford.com is a very good site for what your going to do.
A T5 from a four cylinder will be the easiest swap....but if you intend to make any real power, I wouldn't do it. Be sure you get at least a WC T5. A Cobra spec would be better and a G-Force would be better still if you're going to be making north of 250hp. I've got a big handful of gear teeth that broke off the input shaft of a non WC turbo 4 T5 I can show you to illustrate why....
C-4 is the only way to go. No brakeage / no problems.
