Hey pinto_pride:

I have the Electrical & Vacuum Trouble-Shooting Manual for the 1978 Pinto, Bobcat.  I have
attached a pic of the table of contents.  Tell me what section you are interested in and I will
send a pic of the wiring diagrams.

if u could please post or send me the start/ignition section. that would be great. also is there a compleet under-the-hood wiring diagram. that would also help. this is the problem (i just copied it from my entry on another forum)

"i've been having some tromble with my 78 ford pinto. a few days ago the positive battery terminal jumped off and cause a short. now it wont start at all. it is very weird. when u try to start it, it will fire and run fine as long as the key is in the 'start' position. as soon as the key is returned to 'on', the engine dies. we checked the coil, and its getting power. we also cleaned the jets in the carb and eliminated the possibility of the fuel system causing the error. we also checked the fuses and numorus wires with a test light. we have left to determen that it could be a problem in the ignion. any help on this topic would be greatly considered. if anyone knows where a guy could find a wiring chart for this car that would also help very much. thanks!

That is something to do with the seloniod or related fuseable link ( most likely)

well, thanks for the advice. tomorow my dad is taking in the ignition modual on his way to work. if that is not the fix, then we might try the ignition switch or solenoid. thanks

Hello pinto_pride,
I have had this happen to every later model Pinto I have owned.
1974...I think the 79-80 have a different switch altogether????I think to make them harder to steal.

Somebody help me out here????
I fixed the problem with a NEW ignition switch.
The switch is located on the steering colum and attaches to a rod that is pushed by the Key tumbler.
The part can be purchased through most parts stores.

thanks pintony, i was kinda leaning toward to ignition switch from the beginning. it a new ignition module doesn't fix it, i hope an ignition switch will. also I'm thinking of putting on bigger rims and tires, like 14's on the rear and 13's on the front. just to give it that cool tilt  ;) i was just wondering if they might rub on the back if the tire is to think. dose anyone know of this

thanks!

Hey pinto_pride:

Here are the pics.  Sorry about the quality, but it's the best I could do with the
pic res limit of 100KB.

well the problem is solved. an ignition module from the local autowreck off of an 85 LTD wagon was the fix. now it runs just as good if not better. thanks for the help everyone.  :D
