Title: HEADLIGHT AND WIPER SWITCH KNOBS
Post by: chriss on March 30, 2017, 07:25:41 PM
Since I can't find nos  knobs for my '71.  I called a place that specializes in chrome plating and he said that he can redo them. can some one tell me how the knobs come out of the switches?  it looks like the wiper knob may just pull off the shaft, but I don't want to destroy it.   I  guess Ford changed part numbers for these knobs as of 6-15-71.  my car was built 6-7-71 .

My 72 has 73 HL Switch adapted, but I believe it still pulled off the Shaft. If in doubt, pull switch out to on Position ,then using 90 degree needle nose pliers grab the shaft behind the knob to take the stress off the switch assy internally, Then pull straight out , holding the shaft still so the switch internals aren't damaged. If you still see no movement, and that doesn't release, Stop then look for a retaining pin at the knob base. As old as the plastic is, be careful it doesn't break into pieces. Some German cars (Vw for instance) have a Button to be pushed in the back of the Switch and the whole shaft and Knob pop out in one piece.
If you have no success, stop and rethink how you approach this, nothing more disappointing than having broken parts in your hand.

To pull shafts and know off, pull out instrument cluster and push spring release button on top of switch behind dash.
To just pull knob, on the side there is a cut out for a small object to fit into.  Place screwdriver on the end and  Pull in towards u and you'll release metal tab from shaft.

I was just E-bay and someone had the switches and the knobs for sale. Put in ford pinto knobs and they should pop right up!

Thanks to all..  I'll give it a try, should be easy, as I have the cluster and dash pad off anyway..   as far as the knobs on e bay go, they must be the second design, because mine has the light and wiper/ washer symbols on the face of the knobs.   Chris
