Hello, Starting a new project. Its a 71' thats been sitting for many, many years. A v-8 conversion was started. I will be finishing it. Its a 66 or 67 289 with a toploader from a 70' mustang. 9 inch rear with currently 4.56 gears. Should be fun.
Glass fenders ?
FYI - those are rare headers. Make sure they get a proper ceramic coating to make them last.
Another tip, Ford Racing has a short water pump. Gives an extra 1.5" of clearance.

Pulleys made for them: http://www.cvfracing.com/ford-small-block-pulleys-s/165.htm
Please keep this build up-dated !
steel fenders, they were replaced due to minor fender bender. Thanks for the water pump info. I'll have to check into coating the headers.. here are a couple interior pics. Clutch linkage needs to be made up, i have a z-bracket and parts it mounts to, that will be the next step.
Why not stay with the OEM clutch cable ?
I think that it is a push to release.
Right on,that will be a fun ride for sure with the std trans,I'm building a Cleveland 4 spd as we speak in a 71 pinto. Cable should work as I've set it up to work in mine but have yet to drive it and see if I can can enough adjustment with it but I did find not enough pedal movement to make a full mech system work or rod running through the firewall. Bottom line have fun with it.
set the block/trans in to start mocking things up. Going to try something like this for the clutch, see if I can use the original cable per Reeves idea. http://www.mustangsteve.com/scattershield.html
i'll get some more pics up later.
need to finish making room for the bell and get some metal put in there!

I made a Z bar for mine and have the factory cable hooked to it it works in mock up but will see how it works when the car is on the road.

Has the hole for the cable....... It's what I'm using on the BOSS 302 car.
Nice! I have the lakewood bell already.Going to make it work per steves modification.
Well got it moved into the garage this weekend. Found a 5.0 shortblock i am going to throw some 289 heads on. Had to cut out the headliner and throw away due to mice infiltration. luckily that was all they got into.
still moving forward, although slowly. Found the front frame horns are tweeked more than I thought. car measures square at the wheels, so just have to put the horns back in place. second pic shows how far the front of fender needs to be shimmed to match drivers side. once the frame is fixed the shims won't be needed. cars are like a box of chocolates.........
I see I'm not the only one that had to cut the core support. What did you have to do with the rack and pinion to get the motor to clear? Have you replaced the lower control arm bushings? If so, where did you get them?
Cutting the core support is one of the worst things you can do to a V-8 Pinto. I have seen many V-8 Pinto's with the core support not cut. Cutting it out is a sure way to end up with a flexible flyer. Engine can be put in and out with it in place.
core support was cut when I got it. I got the windshield and dash out today. think I am going to sell the toploader and go c4.
work continues, frame rail straightened, have to weld in a patch, correctly install inner fender, then on to cage/bar.
Well it's been awhile, the project has slowed but still moves forward, life sometimes gets in the way!
cleaned up the underside and getting ready to start on the cage
Looks like you are doing a great job. Like the Michigan plate, I am in Michigan.

I like what you are doing with your car. Don't you just love how these quick projects turn into years? ::)
Did you decide to go with the C4? If so, was it because of the clutch linkage?
I'm just going with a 2.3 in my 79 for now, but the ultimate goal is a 351C and some sort of manual overdrive trans. The car is currently set up for a Fox Mustang 2.3 and T5. I have the Fox 2.3, working on a T5.
Mine was caged (maybe 12 point, at least 10) before I bought it. The fenderwells are completely gone on mine, but I was thinking of doing what you did for the fender mounting. At least for now. Have to decide if I want to make my 74 a parts donor if I go that way. :(
Going one piece fiberglass at some point, but probably not soon. Need to get the car on the road quickly.
Thanks,
Russ
I am going with the four speed, i think i have the linkage figured out. I built a couple peices to help reinforce were the inner fenders were removed. I am going to put aluminum inner fenders in once i have the engine bay sorted out, should help keep it cleaner.
It will be a 10 point when done (cage). and yes it helps when they are drivable, sometimes easy to lose ambition when a car sits too long! lol.
Something for you to think about..... this is a clean install..... I'm likely going to do this to my blue car.

Good to see your rad support welded back in !
No need to cut them......
