Title: ThunderPinto gets an exhaust system.
Post by: High_Horse on August 16, 2005, 01:38:06 PM
As I am in the process of doing this part of the conversion project and thinking about what I want and how it will fit,I wonder what others have done. I will be posting pictures of what I put on the Pinto and how I hang it and my point of exit, but for now I ask other 302 v8 Pinto conversion veterans what they have done(and pictures would be excellant).Again I am using a stock 72-74 302 with a tube in pan c4.
                                                                                             Thanx High_Horse

I finally found some mufflers that will fit. They are two v8 oval stock universals with a 2 inch in and a 2 1/4 out by 21 inches long. I started the car and wow! I expected them to be a little quieter but they are hanging right off of the carryout pipes just behind the trans. The sound is very very low. Definitly a rumble. The pics enclosed are of the exit pipe system. I am going to accent the rumble with 3 inch pipes. The white cardboard thing is the proposed hanger/gusset that I will use.

Here is a top pic of the exit pipe. I have a black line drawn at the outside wheel line. I am having a hard time deciding where to cut this. At the gusset, the halfway point of the tire or all the way out. Suggestions????

Hey there looks pretty cool, was thinking of doing that myself but still not sure.
I was going to cut them off just inside and slightly out of sight. Id cut them at a parallel  angle to the body line. But DEFINTATLY get that bracket out of sight!  :o

I was able to get the rear muffler hanger cross member built today and will be installing it directly. I am also in the process of fabricating two 2 inch to three inch adapters for fitting the muffler outlets directly into the sidepipes. I will take pics along the way. Can't wait to hear how this thing is going to sound. I'm kinda hoping it sounds like .................................
THUNDERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have the drivers side roughed out and ready for clamps. Will be fabbing the final adapter and roughing the right. Note the outside hangers....I painted them black and I will have to dimple the pipes a little because they come close to the front leaf spring mount points. Not to worry.....There is plenty of pipe. The overall sound is deep and reverberatring but low decibel. Although the distinct sound of the 60 over detonation is crisp and ledgable.

UH-OH!!! BUSTED!!!! As I probably only have one chance to make my case(and it better be good) here goes. This car has been my daily driver for ten years. Then 3 years ago it went belly up. So I put it behind the shed. Finally it is conversion time and By God!!!! I'm converting. Body and interior time is next year. But I am dieing to drive it as a sleeper for a little while....alright fine....Coma! But I promise to abide by SHINEY in the future.

Hey there highhorse!
Just wanted to chime in on the "non shiney" thing.  Just last weekend I had the whole sunday to clean the undercarriage of my pinto. I used Castrol Superclean, about a gallon using just a trigger sprayer and full strength .
I  just jacked up the front and soaked everything. Then used a 1500 psi home depot pressure washer and made a HUGE mess  :P (I recommend Very sturdy jack stands and wheel chocks )
I then jacked up the rear, then repeat. Then the front and repeat again. Then take the broken cheap home depot pressure washer back for a new one the same day , and repeat where you left off. >:(
Then  after it dries off you then notice you missed about 50 percent start all over.
Oh yah don't forget to just give up on trying to stay clean yourself. You will be filthy.
And to finish off use some superclean and the pressure washer to clean the drive way .
Then your done.
I'm so glad i got that out of the way on my car. I no longer dread going under the car to work on it!!

So good luck on your SHINEY!

The last time I cleaned the under side of ThunderPinto I got my son and his friends together pulled the car onto the grass and flipped it on it's side. Cakewalk. But one must remember a very important rule of thumb when doing this.............Gas cap up. And hey!!!!!!!! Has anybody noticed my exhaust system? Is this baby boss or what? It's shiney. You Pinto people are so picky.
