Title: Pinto at the track!
Post by: 78pinto on October 12, 2003, 09:56:06 AM
Well, i took the beast to the track saturday!  I was a little dissapointed in the times i got but i believe there is more in it. We only got 2 time trials before racing started and i didn't have time to mess with the timing, fuel pressure or anything.  Best was a 12.7 at 106 mph, but i really think there is more to be had with more tuning. Ok enough of my whinning! Toms '71 broke on thursday night so he did not race, Kim's '78 wagon went 13.7 and my buddies '74 Mustang II 302 five speed went 12.5 with a 100 shot of nitrous and a 13.5 without the juice. I will post more pic when they are developed. UPDATE: Kim's wagon went 13.6 on Sunday...a new best time.

A '73 runabout down at the track, 351w powered. This was a full out race car with fiberglass frontend and gutted interior. It ran 11.30's

my rear suspension is a nine inch with custom made leaf springs, and custom traction bars. Works real well, and no axle hop at all. The motor is fairly healthy...and will be alot healthier this year.  www.redrocket.fordpinto.com (http://www.redrocket.fordpinto.com)

thanks Bob, one more year and hopefully i'll have it all done, just gotta paint it, and  redo the interior.....unless.... i listen to the little voices in my head saying "if you build it with a stroker 427.....it will fly" (my wife would freakin kill me) ;D

Because the money you will spend or because of the speed? LOL

Mine said before I get the 557 in mine I have to take out another life insurance policy...  ::)
I feel the love, really I do... or maybe it was the chili?

Look into my eyes, 427 427 427 427 427 427 427 427 427
Now say it with me....
4..2..7..4..2..7..4..2..7..

BOTH! ;D   The only reason i didn't do that is because my kids like to go cruising in it too, and with some serious horsepower, i'd want to put in a 6 point bar, thus eliminating the back seat.  Maybe someday!  557 should rock!

Let's just stick to our dreams and we'll BOTH have a couple of FAST PINTO'S!!!

Wait a sec... Mine isn't done... ok, well, someday I will have a fast one too LOL

its driveable! I had to take it today for the front end alighment (caster/camber, toe-in toe-out) My freaking god does it pull! Drove it uptown with no hood (not finished yet) and i got alot of stares. It can get sideways in a real big hurry, even with the M/T ET streets! I have a bit of wiring to do (resistors for deleted smog stuff, EGR,TAB and TAD seliniods, EVP ect.) wire up my line lock and run the power for the EEC to the battery in the trunk so when i shut the battery dissconect switch off it does't errase my computers memory and keep screwing up my idle settings! He still hasn't started on my hood yet (not impressed at all) He said it would be done last week! Hopefully some more pictures and a video soon.

Man, I'm excited to hear how she does at the track!!!
Getting sideways in a hurry huh? Welp, maybe it's time for 32/14/15's?? LOL
You'll probably have to play with rear suspension and tire pressures with the new found HP  ;D
What is the guy doing with your hood? Bigger scoop?

Man I cant wait to get either one of mine running, got a 460 to rebuild for the drag car and a 69 - 302 for the Pangra... Just missing a converter and a set of gears before I can hit the track  :-\ and Pangra needs tranny motor mounts and lord knows what else before shes drivable.

So until then.. your my link to the drag racing world.. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! and keep me posted buddy!!

Trying to get the 1969 302 home I bought, complete for $50.00. Needs rebuilt but it's a good start.
Just need a C4 now and should be ready to start working.

How's yours coming along? Get your hood yet???

That wouldn't happen to be Showcars, would it?  They are in Mississauga.  It took me 16 months to get my fiberglass hood and trunk lid from them.
They did a good job, though.
Now if I ever get around to repainting my car, I will put them on.

no, just a local bodyshop, and a guy my fatherinlaw hangs around with. 16 months :o  Thats crazyness!

Well first off I think I'm just going to get it running.. So I can see how the rest of the car works.. then I was thinking about a 331. But all in all she needs a new interior as well. So theres LOTS of work to be done before I spend the money on a fire breathing beast  ;D

16 months... wow.. You guys are more patient then I :)

Hey Jeff,
Definitely go for the 427 stroker. There's nothing like more cubes. And... how can you go wrong with a nice even # like 427? ;D Well, maybe it's not such an even #. LOL But, in the world of racing, BIGGER IS BETTER!!! As far as the kids ridding with, you'll just have to take them around one at a time-- hence, more time behind the wheel for you! Looks like a win-win to me.

no....not yet anyhow! Maybe sometime down the road but for now, 357 cubic inches is enough for me!

Bob, what kind of work is going into the 460? Estimated time frame for completion? I'm hoping to have mine ready for this winter. Being that I'm in S. Fl., winter is about two weeks of 60 degrees 8)

Jeff, The "Red Rocket" is lookin REAL good ;). I can imagine the anticipation for that 1st time slip w/ the new shiney goodies!

Thinking truck crank, good rods (maybe H-beam), stealth intake, 1050 Dominator, worked over 429 heads. This should get me into the 9's.
Then following winter... 557 all the way.

I have to many projects right now to get it done quickly.. son's 306 Ranger.. and oh yeah, let's not forget "Honey do's" Paint the house blah blah blah.

Make sure you let us know on time slips and stuff when you get her on the track.. and VIDEO'S.... we NEED VIDEO'S lol

And I'm with you, can't wait to hear how the "Red Rocket" runs  ;D

My parts list includes - Bryant crank, Kaase aluminum SCJ's and intake, Oliver rods, JE flat tops, 1050 Dominator and oh so much more!!!
As far as the "honey do list"........... Holy Crap! I've got one of those too: Tent the house, remodel the kitchen, and build on a new 350 sq. ft. master bedroom.

A friend of mine used to run a BB in a Chevy Vega, and he did a wheelie through the full 1/4 mile. The track owner told him not to bring the car back untill it had wheelie bars on it. He put the required wheelie bars on and ended up blowing the motor the next time out. He parked the car for quite some time. Just recently he put a SB in it and it's running just about as fast as it did with the BB in it. His best time to date has been a 9.89. I just wish I could get my Pinto to run that fast!
