Pintony,

I appreciate your desire for original staying original. I am really struggling with what to do with my Original 1974 sedan, on the front page with the Playboy model.

I have owned it now for about 3 years. An all original beauty that cleaned up very well form the original owner. I truly think it is about as nice as they come, considering age and original condition. Here's my struggle, I have found nowhere I can be judged as such, all original against like cars. I don't think a Pinto will ever become as coveted as say a 66 Mustang. Even 66 Mustangs that have been frame-off restored bring the same money as an original. Am I being too vain in keeping my car original or should I drop it and paint it if I want to, replace the vinyl top, etc. although it looks very nice for its age. I have touched-up door dings on the sides, but overall the original paint is very good.

I just don't feel like I have found a good 'judging' for my cars condition. Maybe I never will and the only satisfaction is my own, knowing what I have. I look forward to meets with folks on this site, maybe you guys, we guys are the only ones who care about Pinto's.

Your thoughts on keeping original original?

Dave

Hello Dave,
For me, it is not about judging. as long as they at least look at my Pinto and don't just put a judging sticker on it and walk away.
Tercin was at the last show and he can attest to how many people crowd around my Pinto.
My all original lime green Pinto is a show stopper!
Some people walk by and say nice resto. When I tell them it is all original and never painted they stop in amazement and come back to take a closer look.
I think "TRUE SURVIVOR" is much more important than RESTORED.
The nice thing about small chips and such. We know they are there. BUT if we do not point them out to every guy that walks by, he will only see a nice Pinto.
Keep your Pinto original! I think most people are more impressed by that than any restored car.
Hell anybody can fill holes with bondo. and paint it smooth.
People ask me who painted my green Pinto.
My response is "I'm not sure, Some guy at Ford, San Jose assembly plant in 1972." ;D
Your Orange Pinto is an AWSOME looking Pinto.
Just keep waxing the body. I'd say, If your vinal top is in really poor condition have it replaced by a PROFESSIONAL. Your Pinto would still be original. UN MOLESTED.
If you really want a custom Pinto?
Find another that is not as nice and resto-mod that one.

My Brother in his 'spare time' photoshopped that one, I did NOT paint the wagon.

I too believe that keeping the car original is very important & in your case it's paramount considering the condition. There are VERY few in that condition.

We will receive the attention we are looking for in our cars, I believe it will come fast (intrest generated) & loose 60% of it's 'newness' & then taper off to a good overall admiration & acceptance of our cars..

When is the true question,

I'm here havin heart falure when I saw that.
I think that your red wagon is a very impressive Pinto.
Just as important as my green 72. YOUR RED WAGON IS SO COOL!!!
I tell everyone I meet about your wagon, and how impressed I am with it.
AWSOME is not enough!

Original74,
Just keep that Orange jewel just the way it is and find another car to play with. Sure, your Pinto did not stack up againt those other cars....It's A Pinto. But I don't think I have ever brought my car up in discussion and not had somebody mention that they or there family owned one. Pinto's bring back allot of memories for people. They were cheap they were plentifull and most importantly they were just a darn nice car to drive. I would be pretty honored to have my car shown up front on this website with a playboy model sitting in it.

I GET TIRED OF PEOPLE ASKING ME WHO PAINTED MY CAR TOO! I PUT A LITTLE SIGN UNDER THE HOOD AT CAR SHOWS THAT SAYS...THIS CAR IS ORIGINAL..IT HAS NOT BEEN RESTORED!   ONLY  17,--- ORIGINAL MILES!  ORIGINAL PAINT, TIRES ,& OWNER.... NOT THAT IT MATTERS, BUT AT A CAR SHOW I WENT TO WHERE THEY ACTUALLY JUDGED ON ORIGINAL, MY PINTO BEAT OUT A VERY NICE 53 FORD, FULY RESTORED, I WOULD HAVE TRADED HIM IN A MIN. BUT MINE WON BECAUSE IT WAS ORIGINAL, THE JUDGE CAME BACK 3 TIMES TO LOOK AT IT! THIS DOSEN'T HAPPEN OFTEN, BUT HOW SWEET IT IS............. ;D

Original74,
I agree w/the others. Leave your little orange pinto as is. The longer you hold onto that car the way it is, the less and less there will be cars to match. How long do you plan on having it? Forever? Then you should really keep it as is and buy another to fix up. And the whole Mustang thing....I like the car, but who doesn't have one? Everyone has a '66 Mustang and you are not like everyone else. I know how much my pinto means to me and I could give a zoop less what anyone else thinks. I love that car for what it means to me and to me it is the best darn car in the world.

SKY, I would love to see that '78 with 17.000 miles. I saw a '74 sell on eBay with 3,970 miles. I had talked to the owner and ended up emailing the kid who bought it. He was going to drop a V8 into it. What a waste!

Sage and all, thanks for the support. I will be keeping my orange '74 original. I have a '76 Runabout as a turbo project. I need to get some pics and show some updates.

I can't wait to get the registry going when Scott gets it all sorted out. I would love to know how many Pinto's the 1900 members on this site own. I might be surprised!

The orange Pinto should stay the way it is. It sounds like you are heading in that direction. You can restore a car 1000 times but it is only original once.
