My project took a turn last weekend I did not expect. I installed a new disty and now it will not fit under the hood. The reason is that it is an aftermarket HEI unit with the coil included in the cap. I have a Mustang 2 hood scoop, but it will not cover either the air cleaner (too tall) or the disty.
Has anyone installed a cowel induction hood scoop on the factory hood? I did find a link that I could have an entire hood made for +/- 300 with a 2 1/2" rise, but that is out of my price range.
I am also thinking about how to fabricate my own scoop by cutting a strip out of the middle of the hood from the back to the curve in the front and then welding in body panels to fill in the sides. with the use of 1/2" square tubing for support.
That sounds like something I was concideing doing. I dought that supports would be needed if you stick with the same gauge steel and cut it so that there would be an outward slant to the vertical additions. Please take pictures if you undertake this. I am interested.
I bought a cowl induction hood from a company in California. It is fiberglass and was made for the fox body Mustang. It is two inch's tall.I had to remove one foot from the back side.I get a lot of complements about it.You can see a picture of it on the front page of this sight. It is the blue runabout next to the red wagon.
That does look nice. I did notice that you have a later model pinto. The hood on the 73 has a deeper curve in the front. I will most likely try to cut the hood first. If it does not work, then I already have the groundwork for the hood scoop to be installed. Can you describe your installation of the scoop?
Thanks for the response ;D
Making your own isn't all that hard & it (almost) guarantees that the lines will match up to boot. I wouldn't use square tubing to support the scoop (unless you intend to go much over 200mph) I'd use 1/4 or 5/16 pencil rod to define the edges of the hood cutout, then weld the filler panels to that. NASCAR uses 3/8 rod to support the entire hood structure, so thinner rod should be sufficient to support a scoop. Also the round rod will give you a continuous contour for the edges of your scoop, making it look factory.
(WOW! after 3 tries I finally got this posted! not the forum's fault.... every time I tried before MY 'puter would shut down on me!)
If you go to the links on this sight there is a couple of company's that sell hoods for 77 and down Pintos that already have the cowl induction built in.Once i received the hood scoop,i centered it no the hood.I knew i would have to cut some off the back[about 12 inch's].After i made my modification's i took the paint down to bare metal, then i used a very goop adhesive and pop rivets to hold the hood down.I then used fiber filler and bondo to blend it in.then lots of primer. Then paint.
