Title: Paint the Pinto, ..
Post by: Scott Hamilton on October 04, 2003, 05:22:01 PM
Well, I finally called the wrecker out to take my yellow runabout to the local Ford Dealer's body shop. They are taking all the windows out & all the chrome off the car so I can send it away to be refinished. Repainting the car the orginal color...

This will be a long process, I'm looking forward to it!

That's my wife & son saying bye bye to the 'pinto car' ...

Here is a picture of the engine I have been working on in my spare time for 2 1/2 years,....  Mallory electronic dist, esslinger adjustable cam gear, warm cam (don't rember the specifics, ebay find), new preformance carb, hooker header, offie 2 barrel intake, ... I also have a complete air conditioning system I purchased from Kevin Gillespie & rebuilt by classic auto air in Florida.

It will be at the shop for 4 1/2 months...

Does anyone know or have a replacement for the thermostat keeper, the wire 'ring' that keeps the thermostat in the housing?

Are you going for "absolute authenticity" or just want to get the aggravating thing in?. If you just want it in you can tie a string through the t-stat and assemble the housing like normal , using the string to keep it in place. Once it's in pop the string in two , and pull it out.  As far as a keeper i've never seen one, but the pintos are almost as old as i am :P

Man!!  It must have cost a ton to get that stuff rechromed.  I had 8 SMALL peices I wanted to get done and it was going to cost over $400.  No way I could afford that, so I decided to get them powder coated the same color of my accent stripes.

How much does rechroming cost anyways?? I'm hopefully getting a 72 Pinto sedan, but even if I don't I'll want to get the chrome redone on whatever car I get, as it won't look too good on a refinished car, since I plan on getting any Pinto to restore.... I'm just hoping the deal for the 72 doesn't fall through...

Hey Scott; I did a mild restroation on my pinto drag car; but I did not remove the glass because of not being able to find gaskets  and/ or glass if one would break. I really need to put in a new head liner, & I need to take out the glass to fix a small leak on the back window. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'm finally updating this thread after so many years- I have the engine (#2) for the yellow runabout almost ready to slide in. The first engine I had built was put in the green runabout, I ended up rebuilding the green runabout's engine for the yellow... I found out last week that the compressor mount I had for years is for the drivers side of the engine and not the stock side as I had thought. If I can find the stock york compressor mount for the passenger side and the alternator mount for the drivers- I will not need this mount. I have a stock air handler (Purchased from Kevin Gillespie) that was rebuilt by classic auto air in Florida many years ago that I'm routing all the vaccum lines  now for installation hopefully soon. I need to find an idle solenoid for a Weber DV carb.. Anyone have any ideas?
I don't think I will be ready for the Stampede in a few weeks but if it was not for the first and now the second I don't think I would have been this far-
It's not a cosworth but I'm excited about making progress.- ;)

The new paint and chrome look great.  Even the under side of the hood is shinny almost like it has been waxed.  I can just imagine the pucker level you experienced installing the engine without scratching something.  Curious to hear how the new AC compressor works out (i.e., smoothness, power load on engine) versus the original York compressor.
