Did you put some sort of access panel into the trunk floor?
I am going to have this completely below the stock floor. I currently have a big hole where the spare tire well was. I am trying to decide how I want to do this. Ideally I would like to make a cover for this that is hinged so I can access it all from above, but seeing as how my car is a wagon I am not thrilled about having something that may not be fully sealed.
What I am thinking of, and this is just preliminary thinking, is to have some sort of gasket and to have the cover screwed down like with quarter turn fasteners since I will need to open it up frequently for filling the cell.
Another thought is to have a fixed floor, but with a small access panel to get to the fuel cell.
My main concern though is the battery. I really want to be able to remove and install it from above. Which means having a fairly good sized panel.
Yes, it sounds like I am confused. I am. ;D

Hey Russ couldn't you make a removable cover for the battery as well? You could sink the battery in like the fuel cell.

Interesting way of doing it. I hadn't really thought of raising the stuff up like you did.
I am hoping to keep a little bit of usable space in the back.
But honestly I haven't gotten around to checking the fit of the cell I have. I may have to go that route.
Not planning (at least at this point) a cage or tubbing. But if I ever do get a Cleveland in it that may have to change.
I have a fuel cell, but not fully mounted yet. I don't like this one, so I'm just waiting to get the right one. I will be flush mounting it to the floor and deleting the spare tire well. I'll be using a 45 degree filler neck to tie in to the stock filler cap. It will leave the hoses sticking up from the trunk floor, but there will be 90's on those. I have a trunk model, so I can live with that. I'm running a fats system too, which is kinda ugly. I' don't know if you plan to drive this much, but from a daily driver, I hate the whole digging in the trunk and shoving a gas noozle in my car thing, everytime I fill up, every 8 gallons!

For whatever its worth, Rolls-Royce Ltd saw no reason to secure the panel that covers the recessed battery in the trunk floor of my Silver Spur. The battery simply drops into the battery compartment and is covered by a wooden panel cut to fit (yes, this is factory installation) which is then covered by the carpet. Without flipping the corner of the carpet up, you wouldn't know it's there and it has never caused a problem. I see no reason the same wouldn't be true of a Ford Pinto application.

This stuff wasn't going to be in a box, just out in the open below the floor in a frame I was going to build.
Guess I am going to have to rethink this whole thing.
If the fuel cell were bigger I'd just use it on the Ranchero at this point, but that car needs the extra 7 gallons the stock tank has over the cell (22gal vs 15gal) and I can't afford to buy another (bigger) cell.

Only I was going to try to keep what is left of my stock floor.
This is one of those things that makes me feel like I shouldn't be trying this stuff.

On my wagon,I bolted a 1in sq. stock around the hole for the spare. I then mounted the cell on the sq. stock.Problem is its un safe and not legal.Filler neck must be out side the car.
Per Nhra rules if you build a cage protecting the cell from the ground and line it with sheet metal or use a steel caged tank like a bladder tank. then if you install a sheet metal floor over it using screws or if it was me Zues fasteners and right above the cell fill hole just intall a small flip door also held shut with zues fastener it will technically be legal due to its outside of cabin the sheet metal is the "firewall" and its being vented outside of car by being outside of the cabin. and you can still get to the fill cap easy enough and battery buy removing the whole panel. Also to seal the panel id just use a stick on foam or like wise seal.
