I'm trying to dig up info, but I remember seeing somewhere that a 1.6L Pinto engine is a "kent" and that a 2.0 Zetec has the kent bell housing bolt pattern.
Long story longer, I have a free Zx2 at my brother's house, and can pick up a cheap 1.6/4 speed.. Free Zetec + cheap 4 speed= WIN???
Please help me make this happen.
I think this link will provide some help; http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/content/fitting-zetec-mk-12-escort-type-9-gearbox .
The MK1/2 European Ford Escort is relatively close in design to the Pinto with crossflow engine, a lot of the problems that you are also going to run into are carefully explained here.
For most problems they have fixes, but you'll see that it all adds up rather quickly.
I found this info while researching a V6 project. I don't know if the "EAO" is the kent motor.

- From what I remember ,back then the Kent engine (1600 pinto) had the same bolt patern as the 2000 pinto German engine, then the later 2.3 Lima engine , only the alignment dowels were larger, the later 2.3 bell housings got taller and used the upper two bolt holes on the block, they all took the same size pilot bearing,

How to mount the zetec? They have no side motor mount pads at all, they mount on front cam belt cover.
