Title: Easy way to remove Torque Converter?
Post by: sagesunrise on July 24, 2005, 04:04:44 PM
Hey folks,
Is there an easy way to remove the torque converter off a 71 2.0? I have been out there for 2 hours now wrenching and getting ticked and have only managed to remove one of the four nuts..... Not enough room to get a socket in and I am using a box end wrench. Maybe there is a special tool that I need?
Thank you,
Tif

Hello Sagesunrise,
Are the nuts on your converter too tight???
It is a matter of torque applyed.
If you put the nut at about 7 )-cluck and keep your wrench at about level to thw plane of the crank then the converter will not spin.
If your wrench has a good bite???
You could use a dead blow hammer or plastic mallet to tap the wrench to loosen the nuts.
Make sure you use jack stands.~~!!!!!!!!
Spare wheels-tires work good too. If you raise the car and lower the front tires  into the spare tires.
BE SAFE!!!

Thanks Tony. Engine is out and wedged between two large tires (on the rims). Finally got 3 nuts off all together and afraid I may have stripped the other. I will keep messing with it. Box end has a good bite on the nut, just not much room to work. I am sure it will come off someday. :P

oh, and I got the first nut from the 10 o'clock angle and the other two from about 4 o'clock. I might just have to use the rubber mallet trick. I put a 1" wrench on my box end for some extra torque-thus why it is now nearly stripped  :(
