This car was sitting in the driveway in the neighborhood for 15 years. I noticed it 6 years ago. Last month I approached the owner and offered to buy it. He said that it belonged to his late father and he could not bare to give it up. After five weeks I sent the owner a letter and said that letting it rust away is not the way to honor his father. I did not say this bluntly but  gently and diplomatically . The result was that I now own the car. Here are some photos. I will keep you all posted as I fix it up. Is it my imagination but it seems to me that every time a member rescues an abandoned pinto it is always this same color brown?

So I cleaned the outside of the car today. 15 years of tree droppings. The body is amazing. only one golf ball size dent on top of left front fender. One minor rust through of the back bottom edge of the right side door door. I do not understand these flow through doors. Water flows down the window into the door and flows out the bottom. That is the way it is designed. Yes? When I washed it today water just flowed out the 1 inch diameter rust spot. So when I cur this small spot out, do I need to put a drain there? The rubber guard on the sides of the car has done a wonderful job. No parking lot dings anywhere. When I wash the car a lot of dirty water flows out from under the rubber. I fear that rust may be hiding under. I need to remove these for paint anyway, will someone please tell me how to remove them. I will strip out the interior next.
I noticed that there is no insulation blanket under the hood. There is not glue or residue of any kind there. Did pintos have insulation blankets, My bobcat does?

Cowl in front of the windshield is loaded with leaves etc.
Wash it out real well & check for rust.
You may need to remove the splash shields behind the tires to make sure you get it all out.
Maybe fenders as well.

My wagon never had a hood blanket.

Thank you Reeves. I did plan on removing leaves but had not thought about how I was going to do it. I will do as you suggested.

some time has passed. Everything is going well. I am maybe 60 days from paint. I am thinking black with a white top. I have been checking paint codes. I don't find a black. were there no black pintos from the factory?
My second choice is orange with a white top. That I know is factory. Orange with white vinyl top. I will paint the top. Vinyl is asking for rust problems.

Everything I have done so far is inside and under the car. It doesn't make for good pictures. I am putting everything back stock. New brakes, fuel pump, shocks, fuel tank etc. make for boring photos.

joe! the hood blanket is factory!! all the bobcats i have owned have had them! v6 and the 2.3!

My 80 has some fur on the underside of the hood which makes me think it had one at one time or another

Eight months have past I have not made the progress I was hoping for. I am about 2 months from paint. I am torn. I want a great paint job. I also like the patina look. If you look at my photo you will see that the start of a patina is there. I know I can help it along and get the look I want. The interior will be pristine. I don't know if I want attention for great paint or to emphasize that is a survivor by the patina. Anyone done a clear coat over the patina? Photos would be welcome.

Rust on a car, or patina now, is not cool. It keeps going. Call it farina or patina, it's still rush! LOL

You can have that look without the rust, this guy did a few videos on how he did it on his pickup came out pretty good..

I don't have any intention of keeping rust. I will remove rust and clear coat the weathered paint.

It's your car and you can certainly do as you wish, but creating fake patina is like wearing a fake Rolex - it looks phony. Since you say your interior is going to be pristine, I'd paint the outside to compliment that.  Shiny is good!

I agree also , there is nothing better than a Shiny pristine looking inside and out showroom looking pinto .   ;D

Agreed. Do it right and restore it in my opinion. But it's your car and gotta do what you wanna do. Nobody will judge. Although we all like to voice our opinions

And cars look awesome in new paint and interiors. I will never understand the patina on cars, just doesn't make sense...

I can't see it either, I have people tell me all the time I should do that with the Nova, sheezz, gotta be kiddin it's about as ugly as it gets the way it is.. ::) ;D
