This car has been sitting 10 years that I know of. I am sure it does not run. I am new at this, I do not know car values. It is in fair shape with a little rust. There is not a for sale sign. If I offer him $500 is that fair or an insult?
I hate to say this but it could be either one. Depends on the owner.
Maybe just talk to the guy, tell him you are a Pinto person and would like to see what he has. If he seems receptive then see what happens from there. Maybe he is waiting on someone to help him restore it, wishes he never saw it, or he is waiting for it to finance his retirement. You just never know.
If you end up offering to buy it, have cash with you. Most "buyers" in these deals don't have the cash and that ends up getting the owner po'd at everyone.
It also depends on your area. It could be a $500 car, or $1000 or higher. In AZ a rust free car is normal, in Ohio it is extremely rare and brings a lot more money.

Also depends on the year. Early cars are worth more than 74-up. Chances are you will hear the magic sentences "it's not for sale because it was blah blah's car" & " I'm going to restore it some day"
If he may sell you better look it over well. Any car that sat that long out of a garage is going to have issues. Especially look at the floors from underneath. If it's an early Pinto with disc brakes be aware that rotors, calipers, lines & a master cylinder are in order & that stuff will set you back $200+ right off the bat. 74-up are waaaaaay cheaper to replace brakes on.

Amazon has the early rotors for around $60 which is the best price around.

Well, I got an orange 74 but it don't have a black interior, lol.. ;D
So I went up to the owner and asked him if he would sell. He said that the car has been sitting for 12 years. It belonged to his father who has passed on. He is to sentimental to sell. So it will just rust away. I gave him my number in case he changes his mind

Nope... I have a wagon (a '72 Squire, to be exact). Looking for an orange '74 Runabout with black interior. 2.3L with 4 spd. transmission if possible, however would consider other drivetrains.
Well, there's not much around here but I'll keep an eye out for one..
So I bought the car. I sent the owner a letter and pointed out that if the car rusted away it would not benefit, his father, him or me. It worked. I now own the car. I paid $600.00 I probably over paid. I haven't seen another one in my area for ages. I would have to pay shipping on any other car I found. It would have added another $600-$1000 to the price. I will start a new thread with more photos for the rebuild.
