Title: Tranny (?) Noise
Post by: sagesunrise on July 12, 2005, 07:30:38 PM
Not a big deal, but wanted to ask the experts about a noise that I think is coming from my tranny gears. It usually starts when I am doing about 40 MPH in 4th gear :o and I give it a little gas. It is a "bogging down" noise, not a grind. I downshift and it stops. The only reason I am posting the issue is that the tranny was installed rebuilt before my car was slammed into from behind and I don't recall it doing this before the wreck. It does not sound like a problem noise but just wondering what y'all thought about it.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Is It possible that the driveshaft is binding on the tail housing ?????

turbopinto72, when you say tailhousing do you mean where the driveshaft enters the rear of the tranny? The noise isn't causing any lack of performance issues-it's just a noise and it sounds like I am just going too slow for the 4th gear. It's strange, though.

OK....sagesunrise,
If you used the rear axle from the new Pinto and it was an auto trany?
It would have 3.18 gears and your old trany."if it was a 4 speed"?  would have 3.55.
If I have guessed corectly you do not have enough gear to lug around in final drive anymore.

Pintony, you crack me up!
You sure have a lot of knowledge about the pintos! Which I admire. Well, my rear is out of a 79 Mustang II V6 (8" I believe, not sure what the gear ratio is) and the tranny is out of my '73 pinto. Both tranny and rear were together in the '73.  the '71 was an auto but converted with the package from my '73 (manual and Mustang rear). The only suspension part that is stock in the '71 is the rack. But it sure seems like the ol' car does not like going 40 in 4th. I am guessing here, cause I don't have a tachometer yet, but the engine sounds like it is at 3000 RPM's (comfortable) in 3rd at 50 MPH before I shift into 4th and it just purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs in 4th-really low RPM's. It really likes freeway cruising. Maybe the reason I didn't notice it when driving the '73 is that this car is more tightly put together??

OK I don't have an answer for you now.
I do have a funny story.
One time back in 1982 I had my first Pinto {1973} and was on the freeway feeling like I could out-run a corvette.
MAN that little Pinto was running great Really PEPPY for being on the freeway. I drove about 20 miles.
untill I got to my exit and discovered I was in 3rd gear all that way. ;D
I think you have it figured out about the tightness of you rNEW Pinto.

Pintony,
That IS a funny story!  :o My pinto doesn't have much PEP in 4th gear, but she has endurance. What did you have for an engine and suspension in your 73?? (remember, I'm a layman). Thanks!

Hello sagesunrise,
My first Pinto was a 1973, 2.0 W/4spd. Was as fast as I could make it with little money available at the time.
I purchased a Header from a company called IECO and a free flow muffler.
I did some mild port work on the head, and had it milled -.030  The cylinders had .010 wear and I cut the ridge out and honed untill they were smooth. cleaned the stock pistons and installed new rings and bearings.
That engine really screamed for a micro budget re-build. It suprised quite a few SH-evy owners.

I crashed that Pinto into a bridge abuntment at about 60 MPH. It broke the mounting ears off the block and shattered the bellhouse. Ironically the head IS the same head that I just installed on my
AK Miller Turbo project. ;D
Still has the crack in it where the crash cracked the rail that holds the front L.H. valve cover bolt.
I look forward to seeing you in 2007 at the Pinto NATS.
Working on those item you asked about earlier. Shhhh...

This may sound silly, but if I hear a noise in the trans, first thing I do is check the oil level. I've been straining my brain to remember how the 4spd is put together. I'm thinking the 2-4 gearset is higher than the 1-3 set. That said, if it's low it'd likely whine a little in 2nd too. Lug 2nd in a parking lot to see if it makes a similar niose to your 4th gear. If it does you may just need a qt or 2 of 90wt. If 2nd is quiet, then Pintony is right, it may be the rear end. I've YET to see Pintony too far off the mark, I'm just posting a 2nd opinion.

Well, I appreciate your second opinion and will give it a try, thank you.
