Title: rubbing tires
Post by: dumcheesemonkey on August 02, 2014, 09:18:44 PM
i recently got a new problem with my 79 wagon. when i got it back after winter i needed to replace the front drivers side tire. since then while in reverse and turning (depending on how far the wheel is turned) it now rubs the wheel well. not really sure why it started after the new tire but whatever. any ideas on why its doing this or know of a way to fix it?

the tire is probably slightly larger than your old one, even if it has the same markings.
Just like with clothes, even though they use the same sizing, it can be off just enough to cause problems.
If you only replaced the one tire, try swapping it to the other side and see if the rubbing follows. If it does then you are sure of the cause. If not, then something has happened to the driver's side suspension.

Could be evidence of a dead/dying bushing somewhere as well.

175/70-14

I run 195/60/14's in front when I can. The 175/70/14 you have is a slightly taller/thinner tire and I can see that rubbing on some Pinto's. Even the 195/60/14's I run will rub at times... depends on the Pinto I have them mounted on (some will sit higher than others) backing up and sharp turns.

could try 195 or 185 - 60's (wider and shorter) or 165/70/14

I have 185/60/14 on front with a 2" drop and no rub at all.

It's probably just rubbing on the plastic inner liner. If you don't drive in snow & salt take them out.
