Title: Having problems with my fuel indication. Can you help?
Post by: al on July 06, 2005, 10:37:10 AM
A few months ago I purchased a 76 mpg wagon for my daughter. A few quirks are still being worked out, but otherwise it is in great shape! One of the problems I am having is with the fuel gauge only reading half full when we fill the tank up. It reads down slowly as the fuel is spent. I have replaced the gauge with no luck and I also ordered a new float but the guy on ebay was advertising it for a 76 wagon but when the part was received the part number on the float went to a 78 wagon I believe. I hooked up the leads externally and moved the wiper switch manually but the gauge still would not move past half full. The gauge and float ohm out good. All the connections on the cluster gauge look good and are clean. Has anyone run into this problem and can help me out with troubleshooting I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance! al.

The only gas guage/float issue I have run into is when I put my 73 wagon's float in my 73 sedan's tank. My gas guage would stay on full for a long time then go down quick. So I told myself that I had only half a tank once the pointer started moving towards empty and never had a problem. Sounds like you have a different issue-backwards. Maybe it is a sedan's float in your wagon???

Hello:

If you are seeing a high or low (as in your case) reading, then the instrument voltage regulator (IVR) or the fuel gauge might be out of calibration.  If this is the case, both the fuel gage and the IVR will have to be tested simultaneously according to my Ford Car Shop Manual.  However, I only have the 1977 manuals.  I will copy and attach the pages from the 1977 manuals.  Just another thought.
