Hi Group, I'm a newbie at FordPinto but I have participated on the Yahoo Pinto Group for a while and I would like to kick around an idea that has been festering for a while. Here goes: It appears that a Cosworth YB engine from the Ford (overseas) Sierra model has the same cylinder block external configuration and mounting as a 2000 Pinto. This suggests that it would be possible to mount and attach said engine to stock Pinto mounts and drivetrain. The head, intake and exhaust are radically different, but the horsepower and RPM capabilities are also radically larger. From stock 250 HP range to above 750 HP turboinjected.(http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-6/738636/Picture112.jpg)Photo of Cosworth YB in Sierra. Some of these engines should be available from dismantlers in Canada, Australia, or England, the cost and getting them here is probably the critical factor. Any Comments?
Only the 205 block is the same.
ALL other parts are different.
I suppose the yb could be stuffed into a Pinto bonnet.

"Only the 205 block is the same." Yeah, I have done about as much internet research as I can. I know all parts are upgraded strength wise, (steel crank, better rods, even the block is stronger) I was thinking bolting the block to the mounts, bellhousing and flywheel might be the "same" as Pinto stock. Everything else would have to be fabricated, and if the battery and heater blower motor went elswhere, it might be not so hard to have a 4 banger that would make Beemer owners cry.(http://www.wilcoxengines.demon.co.uk/images/yb.jpg)(http://www.wilcoxengines.demon.co.uk/images/cosy-injec.jpg)Take your pick.
Theres a picture of one in out picture gallery. Check it out.
I checked it out! This looks like a great start. The info reads that it is a mock-up for building the necessary exhaust plumbing ect. This mock-up could be accomplished by putting a Cosworth head ect. on a stock Pinto 2000 block, or dropping a complete Cossie YB engine. I wish I knew which. The photo is an aspirated setup, and the stock Pinto 2000 will hold up there, but a turbo would require a Cossie turbo block, and I would like to know for sure if that block will bolt into a Pinto, and where it came from.
Hi, folks. I'm doing a Cosworth Pinto project right now. It's been in hibernation for awhile (kid in college), but I'm beginning to work on it again. Search "cosworth pinto" on google.com to see some pics of the project in its infancy. The only requirement for fitment was fabrication of exhaust headers, but I've done a lot more. I used a Tilton brake/clutch pedal assembly to locate the master cylinders inside under fabricated dash to free up room under the hood for the sidedraft Weber carbs. As you can see from the pictures, I'm making lots of other modifications.
The engine is a dry-sumped, advertised 205bhp, hydraulic cam-follower version I bought from Cosworth in Torrance, CA in kit form. I toyed around with using a T-5 transmission (even built an adapter for the 2.0 block to T-5 (2.3 block) bellhousing, but now I'm leaning toward using a Quaife-built version of the original German Hummer 4-speed. I put in an 8-inch 5-lug rearend and am using 5-lug front hubs from Wilwood, along with 4-wheel disc brakes. I am going to buy an 8-inch floater rearend soon, so I won't have brake pad knock-back from the standard non-floater axle design. If you have any questions, feel free to notify me. Maybe I can help if you want to do a project like this.
This really is a relatively easy swap. Since it uses the 205 Pinto block, motor mounts, etc., are standard issue. If you choose to use a wet-sump pan, there are companies who can fix you up with neat road-race pans for a lot less than the dry-sump equipment I'm using.
I think my email is posted here, but it might be an old one. Just in case, here's my current one: paulramsey@cox.net
Hey Paul,
Nice to see you here in this Forum. Well, how do you like the way FordPinto.com has changed from the past, you were here in its startup. Haven't spoke with you in years, glad to see you are still working on your cosworth, many here have made comments about your work, excellent.
Hi Scott,
I like the format a lot! Haven't been too active lately, but I'm nickle and diming along on the Cosworth Pinto until our daughter graduates from college in December. I'm currently doing so "do-overs"-- things I'd do differently now. I could take some pics of the car, but it's stripped all the way down to bare bones for the do-overs, so it's not much to look at.
Since I submitted the pics last, I've put sheet metal on the nose and tail, and done some work on the back seat area: the back area is all aluminum now. The exhaust will exit through the bodywork on the right side, just behind the door. The hole and ducting are there. Ok, maybe I'll take some pics.
Regards, Paul
Yes........Take pics!!!!
We would LOVE to see some Pictures!!!!!
Hi Paul,
Thanks for chiming in, you have answered most of my questions. I am going to collect the parts necessary for a Cossie conversion into a 72 sedan. Hopefully, I will be able to get an engine complete. I will try US sources, and possibly ask some UK Sierra group members to locate a good used 205 in the UK or Canada.
I already have the Weber side drafts if I end up aspirated. The sedan is in perfect condition and runs very strong now, so I'm not in a rush, and maybe I can do this on a budget.
Any advice from any of you guys would be appreciated! I am at: pintos4all@yahoo.com Thanks!
Jon
