Title: Help with purchase decision
Post by: mkplatt on June 29, 2005, 07:03:16 AM
Hi all. A newbie to your sight, and former owner of a 77 Pinto Cruising Wagon (that's my old one in the photo) looking to purchase a 77 I spotted on ebay. Thought I might post here and see if some of you experts could give me some advice regarding the car...questions to ask the seller, what the car might be worth, etc. Could really use some help here if anyone is willing to help another Pinto lover. Thanks, Mark.

Hello,  Does he have pictures of the floorboards on ebay? I have a 77 hatchback that the frame and floorboards rotted out on.  Tim

Thanks for your reply. This is on my list of questions for the seller.

No pictures of floorboard available, just exterior photos. Dash is severly cracked, but body seems OK with only minor rust, if that is any indication of the condition of the floorboards. Reportedly slid of road, front bumber and stabilizer off car possibly due to accident. Also reports gear shift is loose (?) and appears to be missing the front air dam, also perhaps a victim of the accident.

I can send pictures if anyone would like to analyze the car for me and know what to look for/ask about. Appreciate any and all help anyone can offer. I need to act fast, before someone else possibly grabs it up.

Thanks, Mark

If the buyer WANTS to sell the car he'll get you some pics of the underside of the car. An accident bad enough to bend the sway bar is pretty severe. I'd DEMAND pics of the damage at least. If he REFUSES flatly to get pics of the undercarriage, be suspicious that it's rotted. & bid accordingly. Lots of things can be fixed pretty easily, rust repair , however, isn't one of those. Just ask some of us that have done it.

Best I can tell you is "Caveat Emptor" a seller balking on giving info is likely hiding something!

Thanks for the advice crazyhorse. I am indeed leary of unseen/unspoken damage to the undercarriage from the accident, as well as floorboard conditions. I will be sure to ask the seller for additional photos.

Thanks again....Mark
