Hello I am new to this site. I have a 1980 pinto 2.3 as well as a unknown year c3 trans. I was going to buy a flex plate and torque converter for it but I see that the 70s pintos use different tc, s than the 80, s what will I need as far as tc and flexplate? Can I just use all for a 1980 since that is what the engine is? Thanks for the help
Actually maybe I should just ask if there is a way to find out the year on my c3 tranny. The only numbers I found were 74DT-7A231 and G80290 if this may help?
Hi Natedwag15,
I just took out my 76 C3 transmission and swiched it to a C4. I have a low mileage flexplate and Torque converter. Thew Converter is not stock, I took it to a converter builder and raised the stall to 2500 with a stock 2.3. I would be willing to sell both for $40 + shipping.

Hi Natedawg15,
I missed the part that it needs to be an 1980, sorry.
Dennis
I am realy not sure if it needs to be an 1980 that is the motor year. I am not sure on the tranny I wonder if the way the tc bolts to the flexplate is the only difference. Not sure that is kinda what I am trying to figure out. Please find out what it would cost to ship that to 60957 paxton il might take a chance for that. Thank you
Hi Natedawg15,
I bet that you will not have any problems with the converter and flexplate that I have, as long as you have a C3 trans. The recommended flex-plate for your car WITH A C3 is a D4 part number, which is a 1974 part. Follow this link to Rockauto: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=65709&cc=1135268. My flex-plate is exactly what is shown, and was just removed last week. I will look into shipping tomorrow to your zip code.

Thanks please let me know.
I too think you can cross use year models mostly. Difference will be in V6 or the 4 and C3 vs. A4LD which have a clutch in them and won't work. Make sure the OD of converter is right. A4LD is a C3 modded to have OD and a converter clutch. The C3 does not have that.
The V6 and 4 are different stalls for different engines, the OD may be different.
Hi Natedawg15
I checked FedEx ad the ground shipping rate is $25. Let me know what you would like to do.
Dennis
Yes Dennis it seems like it will work. I will take the setup it will be 65 for everything right? Do you have paypal I will send your money asap if you can send me your paypal info.
Turns out the converter will not fit the 1980 motor the little shaft that slides into the engine is the wrong size. Bummer I will keep looking.
Hi Natedawg,
Is the hole too small, or too big, on the back of the engine? Can you measure the pilot hole? I looked up on Rock auto a torque converter for a 75 pinto C3, and it is the same for a 80 C3. They do however call it a stepped pilot, 0.875" to 0.750". I do not remember but i think the converter I sold you is only the 0.75" pilot. Please let me know the details, and if the converter doesn't work out, you can keep it and I will give you some money back.
Dennis
No you do not need to send any money back. The converter was to big my dad is a machinest he can make it smaller. I was just wanting anyone else doing it to check it out. Should hopefully have everything together this weekend. Thanks again.
Torque converter simply pilots off that snout, it does not spin separately like a clutch/trans input shaft does. Being the difference is an exact 1/8" there are a number of ways someone could take up that looseness there. Maybe some kind of $4 silicon bronze bushing at hardware store, we got them all over the place here. A piece of 1/16" sheet aluminum cut carefully in a strip and rolled up in there to be trapped would work.
