Title: boring engine block
Post by: tim1223 on June 27, 2005, 02:02:46 PM
Hello,  how many miles does a stock 2.3l get on it before they have to be bored?  I have some new standard pistons that I would like to use IF possible.  I know that there are many factors that have to be considered.  I was wondering how many miles other blocks have before they need machine work done to there block.  Thanks Tim

Hey Tim,
Find a 2.3 turbo block 85-89 they almost never have wear on them.

Some 2.3's came stock with 0.020 oversize pistons.

I didn't know that.  Did any Pintos come with the oversized pistons?  Do you know the block #'s or are they the same?

You will not know until you pull the head and look, but my 77 Pinto Wagon came with .020 pistons from factory.
The way I understand it if a new block had a casting flaw in the cylinder wall they would bore it out .020 and put it in the new car rather than scrap it. The size will be stamped on top of the pistons if it is oversize.

Can I use rebuilt (non-turbo) head on a turbo block?

Hey Tim,
I would say Yes!!!
Somebody back me up> ;D
The turbo head and the oval port head from a PINTO both use the D-combustion chamber.

Thanks for the info pintony.  Now to find a turbo 2.3l.  I'm going to build up a back up motor,  because I have enough parts sitting around to do so.  That way I can minimize the time that my Pinto is off the road.
