HI all, I am a new member. In 1971, I purchased a new Pinto sedan with automatic and traded it for a 1974 Squire wagon with all the goodies .One year later,I had to sell it because I needed money due to a divorce. I have always missed my Pintos. LOVED THEM. Now,I have decided to buy one, hopefully with the help and advice of you club members. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Sincerlely Softtony
Welcome aboard Tony!
Thank you, Raquel

Welcome to the site Tony.
Thank you very much, Art
Purchase a rust free Arizona car !
My criteria for purchasing a Pinto was to find one with little or no rust. So I looked at states where it doesn't snow and thus no road salt. I found mine in Tampa, FL and had a buddy who lives there check it out for me. I had a car carrier company transport it north. It had virtually not rust. The desert south west would probably be the best place to look
You can fix everything on a Pinto with time and MONEY, but if its a rust bucket why bother?
Hey the wagons rock, so look for that wagon like you sold! I LOVE MY PINTO WAGON. You'll need to decide if you want pencil bumpers or the big ones also. A/C is always up there for me and the Pinto has it, but the other cars I have don't (well the Maverick and Mustang).
Welcome and nice to meet ya!
Tony , take your time. There are a lot of nice Pintos out there for sale you can get for a really good price.Ask around locally at car shows and swap meets. You would be suprised to find out whats out there. Where are your located?

Yeah, wish it was a 75 or earlier. :(
What's the difference? They all have big bumpers from 73 up?

OK, from 1971 to 1973 they were pencil bumpers them the big big bumbers from 1974 on. You want a 1975 or older. The grill is the same I think on up to 75.
So I guess you like the 1975, but not the 1976? Is it because of the grill?

Oh, they are not exempt there after so many years? Here they don't need emissions after 25 years :)

Yes 75 and earlier is exempt here, I do live in a "non" smog area but if it's newer than 75 change of ownership requires a one time check to get it registered, and they rip ya big time on it.. >:(

Yeah I can understand that. Seems the government likes to rip people everywhere...

Not really the Gov but the smog places, when we moved here had to get the wife's 86 Toy done and they ripped us for $80, and that was a corner joint a dealer wanted over a $100...

Probably like Pennsylvania was also. Each place you would bring your car had a different problem they found that needing fixing. I remember that Sears back then was fined for this also. It was pretty bad actually, and I remember one of my cars had different prices for different things that needed to be done. Not one place was the same and the car was fine. I think they changed that now...
I remember that stuff, it was like that all over you had to be real careful or you could get ripped real easy, I remember a lot of places got shut down because of that crap.

Yeah, they fixed it in Pennsylvania I think. But yeah, a lot of places were fined and even shut down there!
Yeah, and a lot of states went to state regulated smog stations.

Yeah we have that where I am in Idaho. It's only two counties here, and the reason they implemented it is because the feds were going to take away the highway funding. I'm in one of those counties that have emission testing, 3 of my cars are except though :D

I think it went like that with most states.
In Pennsylvania, a lot of counties do not require emmision testing, mine does. The look the system over and make sure it has not been tampered with and pressure test the gas cap. There is a seperate sticker for the safety inspection which all the counties have except for antique registered vehicles which my Pinto is. The legislature just passed a huge hike on all fees which takes affect next year, I think.

I left there a long time ago. They used to do an inspection on the car also, and every single place you brought a car to would come up with something different to charge you for. This was in the Allentown/Quakertown area. Maybe it's changed now...
I have a 77 wagon and in ca it had to be put on a treadmill plus gas cap pressure test. These cars Dermot designed to pass these types of tests. MINE passes but 1 year it flunked the fuel pressure test on the fuel tank.had to have a shop put smoke into the tank under pressure and it had a small hairline crack in one of the 3 lines under drivers side area replaced small section and it passed smog.I now have historical vehicle plates on it no more smog checks yeah ;D chris
Problem with Classic/Historical plates is the amount you can drive them. I don't like being inhibited with that to be honest. If you could get those without limitations, I would :D
I have had them on my car over 1 year now no problems with being stopped. I'm always on my way to a club meeting/car show etc. chris
Understood, and hence a limitation of car shows and so on. I'd rather just have regular plates and no limitations on mine :)

That was pretty cool actually, went to Idaho and it was as I said, here you can't use it for regular use :(
Thanks, that was a pretty cool site!
