Recently acquired a 72 Pinto wagon, 2.0 ohc & 4 spd manual trans. There is no spring resistance felt on the gear shift lever gate when engaging reverse, so it's too easy to engage reverse instead of 1st. Is the fix for this in the shifter extension housing on top of the trans or is it inside the trans with the gear selector shift rods? Do I have to remove the trans to fix it? If anyone can scan & email me a picture of the mechanism from a manual so I can see where I need to go I'd be grateful. Can't find anything on line.
what you have is a very easy fix .. i just dont have pictures of what you need ..someone else will .. the shifter is held up by a rubber thingy that fits between the trans and the shifter ..it is held in place by a c clip .. you may need to replace the plastic thing that goes under the shift fork as well ...done it many times just too long ago ,,,,
Here is a link with details about someone that had the same issue:

The corrugated rubber spring could be tore missing or the c clip might be off.
Not to jack this thread here... but would this problem cause this shifter to just flip flop around? The hatchback I drove yesterday was like that and I wasn't sure what the problem was.
