Okay, talking to a local Pinto guy today I learned that a Runabout (speaking ov 71 only here) is a hatchback, and a sedan is a trunk car. Is this always the case? The Runabout is considerably lighter than the sedan... I've been searching high and low for one for that very reason. I would PREFER a hatchback... if only to have a slightly more useful car. So are ALL 71 Runabouts hatch cars? or are ALL 71 hatch cars Runabouts?
Runabouts are hatch cars. I don't think I've ever seen a sedan with Runabout emblems. My '71 half hatch has the emblems but my '73 sedan doesn't.
My 71 and 72 hatchback both have the Runabout metal letters.
Trunk models don't. Only the 3-doors were Runabouts.
Was wondering why your looking for a 71 only? Because they
are the lightest Pinto by weight which they are BTW?
Phil
Cool, thanks guys. Should make my search easier and harder at the same time....

Its all about the weight, and that 100+lb difference is huge to me. The added bonus is that i want a hatch too... so turns out i get the best ov both.
71
Runabout
hatch
4 speed
A disc brake NO-option car would be absolute perfection.
Thats my criteria. I hate regretting buying
almost the perfect car...

71 small window hatch car (from what the guy said) will not part out whole car or nothing....

Perfect... except for the whole gotta pay for it 3000 miles away by tomorrow. 'Tomorrow' is also 3 weeks ago by my calendar... i wonder if he still has it?
4 speed too... dammit!
shipping is the reason i don't have it, I did talk to the guy, I was hoping he would change his mind... Someone close needs to grab it if it is truely and Small window hatch car like he told me...
So my 77 bob just says bobcat on it, were they runabouts as well?
from what i have found NOT all hatchbacks where runabouts! my 75 bobcat is a runabout, but have seen a lot of others in salvage yards and epay that where not a runabouts!! not too sure what makes one a runabout though!!
My '80 hatch doesn't have any Runabout emblems but all the hatches have always been referred to as "3-door Runabouts. Here's a Bobcat brochure that calls them Runabouts & early ones had the emblems.

This press pic always fascinated me. Where's the rear license plate & did they actually stamp these bumpers out in volume??

I briefly drove a '78 Bobcat, it had the full hatch but didn't say 'Runabout.'
