Hi guys and gals,
I'm new here. I have a 79 Pinto Pony SW, and I've got a rust problem. There are three spots on the fenders where there is some rust, and there is some rust on the floorboard I need to get rid of.
I have treated the areas with WD40 to keep it from getting worse, and it's kept it from getting worse, but what do I use to get rid of it?
I've read about several methods: one is to use sandpaper, and primer. Another is to use Naval Jelly, then treat it with primer once the rust is gone. Another method is a rust-remover that turns rust into "black magnetite" or something. The last one sounds more inviting only because there'd be a bit more metal left....
But have any of you removed rust and been successful at it? What method did you use? do any of these modern "rust-removers" actually work?
I think that you should try something called ONE STEP, I think that it's made by DupliColor. It is an arosal that converts the rust into black primer. I've tried it on my rear quarters, it seems to work somewhat well. There are no real "Rust Removers" because no matter what you do, including sanding, primering, bondoing, whatever, once rust has hit metal it will always remain there, if if you think you have got every last bit of it, you paint it and it will eventually bubble again. The only real thing that you can do to kill rust is to replace the piece of metal. I know, pain in the butt. If the holes/bubbles are small enough you can take a body hammer, the kind with the pointy end, and poke the rust holes out just till you get to the good metal and fill it with some bondo- but only if the hole is small enough. Also, a DA sander and Bondo will keep the rust at bay for quite a while, but remember- rust is a chemical reaction and the best way to get rid of the rust for good is to replace the metal.
I use metal prep acid. and a small wire brush.
Can be found at any Napa that sells paint supplys.
