Title: 2.3 Mustang engine troubles- HELP ME IF YOU CAN!!
Post by: BlueGoldPinto on June 06, 2005, 03:55:11 PM
Ok people so heres the deal, my brothers 1993 Mustang LX broke down the other night, and it wont start. He said it sputtered and he started pumping the accelerator and then it quit. It won't start. We took off the fresh air hose connected to the throttle body assembly (fuel intake, whatever you want to call it) and there was oil up in there. Well, he never did tighten his timing belt after he intstalled it a few years ago, so we figured it was that. So we took the timing cover off and sure enough, the belt had lost a few cogs. So we checked the spark next, and it had a weak spark, but still a spark. so then we changed the timing belt, and the spark plugs and the spark plug wires, but we never disconnected the negative battery cable. The spark plugs were burnt when we took them out. We finally muscled the timing belt back on, sprayed some ether (starting fluid) in the fuel intake, tried to start-no go.  So then we took a Ford Code Reader and plugged it into the computer and it said that systems were O.K. We then re-checked the spark and there was no more spark. I gapped the plugs to .040. It still wont start. I'm going crazy. What is wrong?  Could it be possible that the magnetic-pick up is bad and that it needs replaced?  Is there a fuse that runs that EEC Module? I know that there is a fuse link on the same link as the solinoid, but I checked the solinoid and it cranks the car. Has anybody messed with these? I just chaned the magnetic pick-up and module on our 77 dumptruck, but that had a good old fashioned distributor- none of this new fangled computer run junk. HELP ASAP!!!

Since it stopped running, has it given any indication that it might start or does it just turn over and do nothing? If it's the latter, you might try replacing the TFI module on the side of the distributor. When these die, the engine will turn over, but it won't start at all.

If it is the 8 Sparkplug check the coil packs they could be bad?

Since it sounds like he might not have put the timing belt on properly the first time, I'mm going to guess that the timing isn't right.  How exactly did you set up all your marks?  Do you have a timing light?

Well, all three of these have been racking my brain when it would'nt turn over. We set up the timing right this time, we found the timing marks on the crank pulley, and the other two larger idler pulleys and marked them with chalk and just lined up the lines. The timing light showed no spark at all after we did this, so I still don't know if that is what is causing it, but I really didn't think that that was it. It cranks, but doesn't act like it will start. It has 6 sparkplugs,  not eight. But we did check all connections to the coil packs, they tested ok. Now this brings you to the lovely TFI Module. I didn't want to think that two went bad in 2 seperate vehicles in the same 2 weeks, but my brother borrowed a tester from a friend and it said that the module was bad. We're not qiute sure if we did the test right so we are getting another mdule and testing that too, but I think that we have found a winner. Thanks for the help, people!!! ;) :)

Most aftermarket modules are not that great, quality wise. It definately seems to be hit or miss with them, mostly miss! The best thing to do is buy one from the Ford dealer.

Well, got a test module last night, a known good one that was pulled off a running Ranger. It did'nt do anything. So the next thing that we're going to try is a new magnetic pick-up. I think the magnet can be replaced by itself by the pull of a simple tab- but if not, the whole assembly will have to be replaced. Yes Yes I know, not fun. For those of you that have not messed with this, this involves taking the wires through the back of the block and unhooking from a fun jumble of wires that runs god knows what, probably everything important. :o Oh well, its only 97 degrees, Mabye I'll melt before I have to install anything ::) But I guess it's better than freezing your butt off, right?
