i have a 1980 ford pinto 2.3 with a 5200 carb my carburetor is getting way to much gas and it is flooding out not running good at all it does not wont to idle try ed to mess with the fuel and air mixture and got no were also i am getting gas under the valve cover in the oil have no clue what can be wrong please help
The people here at ford pinto can help you can you handle a rebuild kit we will work with you to make this happen ?
I did a rebuild on the old carb and that didnt really help so i went and bought a refurbished carb still no diference
What did you do in the rebuild? I think you should take out the float drop it in a bucket or bowl of gas and mak sure it floats. Some people weigh the floats to see if they soaked up gas. I guess the foam ones could. Hollow ones just get a hole and would sink. Make sure the float drop and other flot setting are set correctly. I thought mine were right the last time I did it but gas was coming out so I knew there was a problem.
Also check the power valve diaphragm. And the needle and float seat.
Yea on the old carb i replaced all of that and still didnt have eny luck im wondering now if maybe its a adjustment screw or somthing i also cant figure out why Im getting gas under the valve cover in the oil i just put in a new valve gasket and when i pulled the valve cover off it smelled alot like gas
Since you are flooding the engine, the gas can run down cylinder, past the rings, and into the crankcase.
If you are using the stock mechanical fuel pump, maybe its pressure regulation is malfunctioning and overpressuring the carb. A mechanical fuel pump can also dump gas directly into the crankcase, but it takes the failure of two diaphragms on the 1980, I believe.
Just some random possibilities. Hope you find the problem.
Were would the fuel pump be?
On the 2300 engine, the stock fuel pump is located low on the driver side of the engine, near the front. From the carb, follow the fuel line down to the fuel pump. The Ford manual claims the pressure should be 5 to 7 psi with the return line pinched off. To check this, a T fitting and gauge have to be plumbed in between the pump and carb. As usual when playing with pressurized fuel, be mindful of the fire hazard and keep a fire extinguisher handy.
Ok cool i try checking that this weekend but also have a new problem as of today i have alot of oil leaking out from some were by were the trany meets the engine have no clue were that is coming from anyone have eny ideas
Since the oil leak is new and you just replaced the valve cover gasket, the first suspect would be the new gasket is not seating correctly. There are a number of other sources for a oil leak in that area including: oil pan, crank rear main seal, crank rear main cap, oil pressure sender, head gasket, transmission seal. If the source is not obvious, I use one of those aerosol can engine degreasers that you hose off. After the engine dries, start it and look for any new wet areas.
Would eny of them seal make a piston not work right cause i just checked the presure on the pistons an #3 is not getting a good reading i alo did a wet test and it was the same
When a single cylinder is low and stays at the same low number when oil is added, it is most likely a valve problem, possibly a head gasket, or maybe a piston if the number is really low. There is a rule of thumb for what acceptable pressure readings are, but I do not remember it. Just guessing, if the low one is 20% below others, you might have problem. What are the pressures you read? If it is a head gasket problem, you may see bubbles in your coolant. The oil passages in the head gasket are not near the #3 cylinder, so a oil leak there is unlikely. Sounds like you are chasing multiple problems.
All the cylinders read about 140 axcept the #3 was 60i and yes seems like i have alot of problems
You could have a valve on #3 adjusted too tight, so that it's not closing fully. Checking that would be my next diagnostic step.
2.3 valves aren't adjustable. You have a burnt valve or piston issue. Time for a rebuild. And this is most likely the root cause of the other issues

Oops. Didn't intend to mislead, too much time under the 2.0's tins for me, I suppose. :) lol
haha yep it happens! Anyway your thought process is dead on, next step, check for a valve issue
