I'm going try to upgrade my Pinto XR4Ti into a Pinto SVO over teh snowy months. I got most of the parts. But one thing that I am wondering is, with those Garrett Airesearch 2.3 engines, did the '85 Merkur use a smaller turbo then the other Fords of the time. I also have an IHI off an actual SVO, would it be worth swapping despite being smaller? Thanks!
SVOs never used the IHI only the 87-88 birds did. The Svos used both the .60/.48 and the .60/.63 T3 turbo and either of whivh is better then the IHI and are more capable of producing more power.
The only real difference between the older bird/Xr4ti turbos is they never used intercoolers so the compressor housing was different on the svo and didnt have the 2 bolt flange for the charge pipe they used a round outlet so the intercooler could be hooked to with a rubber coupler.
The 2 bolt turbos can be modified to work with an intercooler pretty easily though.
The only real difference between the T-3's that one was for an automatic and one was for the T-5. Also the SVO's had an intercooler (smaller than the 87-88 T-bird).The Merkur XR4ti did not. the 1983-86 T-bird also used the T-3 without an intercooler. Look on EBay to change the housing if you want a T-3/T-4 or see about having it rebuilt. Stay away from the Chinese stuff, some are good most are bad....

wow!!!!! ive seen 300,000 mile shortblock turbo2.3s running 10s in the quarter.... my old turbo block had 185000 on it and 385whp..... they are good to about 400 hp stock bottom end components.......beyond that they will break rods..... but who stays in the pedal longer than 15-20 seconds anyhow?
if you make statements like that you need to add what conditions they were testing under.......all the pertinant info needs to be disclosed.....

Only way they are gunna throw rods is if its got well past 400hp and your turning it well past 7500rpm all on stock parts Ive rodded the crap outta my 2.3 turbo with no issuses.
Yes I know not all are bad I'm not trying to tipe all that just saing I will never do the 2.3t in my car
Yes not all 2.3t are bad all engines will fail at some point
2.3's will eat most V-8's for a lot less time effort and money....If you want a V-8 buy a Mustang....Just how much did you spend on a 408 and 351 ? Way more than my junk yard 2.3 Turbo...All of my parts etc except for service items, gaskets, new fuel pump etc are either used or junk yard parts.....Hell just how much did your headers , engine mounts etc cost....You have 16 rods, pistons, bearings etc between your motors and just how much money per horse power have you spent ? Let alone everything else to support the engine, rear end, springs, brakes etc.......It takes allot of cash to convert a 2.3 to V-8 and have it work and be safe.....Otherwise your in a flexy flier that can not stop.....Might go straight but you might not want to drive it to work every day....

Free 351W but you're right turning a 351W into a 408W is not at all saving $ nor is a T56 transmission manual 6 speed

I need to pull the V8 put of my wagon and build a turbo 2.3 or 2.5 .....way less headaches.
I always heard there was a turbo lag at low rpms on turbo motors. Not long ago I saw someone saying they were taking off their supercharger and going to a turbo. I know some people use nitrous at low rpms to overcome the turbo lag I guess. And there were some twin turbo cars (Im a corvette enthusiast) has anyone run a twin turbo on a pinto? What has your experience been with turbo lag on your turbo 2.3 and what do you do to eliminate or reduce it?
port work to head intakes and a good flowing header, proper size turbo, camshaft, gearing and tire size all play into what you get as an end result.... if you dont look at all of these items as a whole when you build your 2.3 turbo you wont find the optimum combo... some get lucky and get close without studying the whole build but not many do.... if youre looking for 200-250 whp that can be achieved cheaply with stock turbo components.. thats enough to be fun.... for most.....
an engine is an air pump, the more you can get in and out the more power it makes....
