Are the wagon and hatchback gas tanks the same for 1980's? Thanks for the help!
All I can say for sure is they have different part numbers & capacity.
That probably says it all. My tank leaks when filled to the top and I can have a free hatchback tank, but now I know it won't fit. Thanks!
Sedan, when I pulled the tank out of my wagon I noticed that the fill tube had a rubber gasket that sealed it as it went in the tank, any chance that could be your source of leak since it does it at full tank? Might be that rubber has dried out / cracked and does not seal any more, might be worth checking. Bud
Have you checked the vent valve rubber grommet ? It's located on the top of the tank to the right of the filler tube.
it`s not the least bit difficult to pull the tank ;).. pull it and see .. my 80 tank was rusted at the top .. would only leak when full as you say ..but it was too rusty to save anyway ...
If your tank is leaking due to rust, find a radiator that cleans and seals gas tanks. They clean them out and plastic baked on coat them.
The screws on the filler that have to come off, they are allen wrenches. Are there nuts on the back, or self tapping. I am asking because on an old Pinto I tried to loosen them and they were frozen fast. I need info before I try to work on my car. (it runs so well!)
should be torx type screws and no they have no nut on the back side .. they just are very tight .. dont worry about breaking one .. they only screw into sheet metal ..
You will also be able to get the screw out with a 9/64 size allen wrench. Just secure the allen wrench in a pair of vice-grips to get the stability and leverage for removing the bolts. Just did this today.
