Ok guys i am 16 and am a car guy. I love working on all types of things. It all started by working on lawnmowers and now to cars. My grandpa left me a 74 pinto hatchback that has sit for 25-30 years. It was in a barn the barn fell but luckly it fell and did not harm the pinto. So anyway here lately I have come intersted in working on the car. The motor is locked up but I am in the process of getting it unlocked. My question is i checked the radiator for coolent, and none was there. Well I took the bottom hose off and inside of hose was filled with rust particles. But smelled of coolent. So did the coolent just rust inside the motor.
Some of the cooling passages might have some rust. Do a back flush and fill change the hoses etc....As for the engine being seized what are you using? There are many types of oils etc that can be used to free up a motor... Do you or can you get clear title to the car ? It might be a very good idea to get the title info squared away before you spend money and time on a car that in the states eyes is not yours....Been there done that....
i tried some automatic transmission but going to try something else. As for the title my grandpa died 4 years ago so everything was taken care of.
how did you determine the motor was locked up ?
Welcome to PintoWorld! 8)
Let us know where you're located, there may be someone that can give you some experienced hands-on help.
Mike
Is it automatic or standard transmission? I've used marvel mystery oil but transmission fluid usually does the trick, but I'm of the same mindset as the other guys, what makes you think it's locked up?
If it was in a barn, most likely that the rings rusted up and froze to the cyl walls. Take out sparks plugs, spray in "Blaster" avail at most auto parts. wait 2 hrs. then use wrench on lower front pulley to try to turn over motor
first of all welcome. and im so glad you like pintos, my first car was a pinto when i was 15 and i still have it.
about your problem let us know here you are at. im sure if we are close by we wont mine helping you out with a hand. and about the motor been locked up make sure you have plenty of oil so that the oil cover the crack shaft and take the spark plug out and try to look in to see if you have any water in the cylinders, if you dont see any add a cap or two of oil in each cylinder and let it seat over night or for a few days and then try to turn it with the spark plugs out. that should do the trick. also before you try to do all this make sure the motor is seas and not that is something else. the motor may be fine but it could be something else make in it lockup. like your starter, transmission, etc.
I dunno bout cars, but I've used Marvel Mystery Oil on atleast a dozen stuck Briggs 5HP engines. I used about a half a shotglass in most cases-but this was after taking off the headplate.
Glad ta hear of another young [and probably also goofy] person on there - hell I'm only 18!
i put a breaker bar on the bottom pulley. I am in the upper part of south carolina almost north carolina, near spartanburg.
I remember my grandpa telling me how when he was about 15 him and his friends found an old car that was seized up so they filled all the cylinders with kerosene and left it for a week. when they came back it turned over and actually started. they ended up playing with it in fields until the engine wore out. I don't think i recommend this if you expect to drive it long.
You guys aren't the only young people on here, I'm 19
Man... look at all the young Pinto owners.. Let the Pintos live on for sure, with all this youth supporting the Pinto!!!!!
ccrain, I'll give you a long block that I have in the shop, if yours is locked up. Pay for the shipping and it's yours.
Ok, johnbigman2011 i am going to piddle with this motor a little and just try to get it unlocked. I really appreicate all the help guys!! A little more about myself i love old stuff. I go to a bunch of flea markets , thrift shops looking for old stuff usually car related, farming etc. I started working on lawnmowers when i was 6 or 7 , then little by little i learned about cars. In the past year or two I have collected older camping stuff made by coleman, lanterns , stoves, canvas tents etc. And again thanks guys for you kindness. I am out of school this week wed-friday for thanksgiving holdiay and plan to piddle with the pinto.
You probably do not need a title to this car. Just documentation that your grandpa left it to you. (A letter from the executor of the estate will probably suffice.) Good Luck. jt
also the motor is a 2.0.
