Title: 1975 pinto new rebuild no power
Post by: theeges on September 02, 2012, 09:52:18 AM
Hi all, new to this site and am hoping for some help. Recently I rebuilt a 1975 ford 2.3l with manual transmission to put in a kit car. I searched the web and came up with 6 degrees btc at 550 rpm for the static timing. since then it has run like a dog. small hills bog it down and it seems to act like it is running rich with an intermittent miss at idle. The carburator is a holley 2bbl 350 cfm. when I step on the gas it bogs down like the vaccuum advance doesnt work, and I smell gas. I have checked the advance to see if it works with a timing light and it seems to advance more than the mechanical advance does. It could use a rebuild on the carb, but the spark plugs have the tan discoloration like it is running all right. So far the engine has about 300 miles on it and I would like to find out if something can be done to make it run better before I screw it up and have to start all over again

Thanks!
Dan

See links below for some of the 350/500cfm 2bbl Holley threads for jet and power valve recommendations.  Racer Walsh advertises a power valve modification kit that is reported to be helpful, search for "carb restrictor" on this link: http://www.racerwalsh.zoovy.com/category/4cylinder/ (http://www.racerwalsh.zoovy.com/category/4cylinder/)

Not familiar with the 75 timing control to know if what you described is normal or not.  Hopefully somebody else will.

I used the restricor kit on my 4cyl car and it works good. I always ran 10 * BTDC for static timing but my guess is the cam timing is off. I posted a thread on here years ago on how to check and adjust cam timing, maybe someone can find it and post a link. Cam timing is critical on these engines.

Thanks guys! I have ordered the car restrictor kit and will try the #56 jets that were suggested on that website. Also I figure I will be taking the valve cover off soon to check head bolt torque, so I will check to see if I'm off a tooth while doing that. Thanks in advance, let's all cross our fingers now! Ha.

Hi again all, I have finally fixed the problem. I sent away for the carb restrictor kit and installed it along with rebuilding carb and tried some #58 jets. no change in the performance of the engine, so this weekend I checked the alignment of the timing marks. That was where the problem was. On the cam sprocket there is a drill point about 3/8" dia, on one of the "legs" of the sprocket, but no dot or line or arrow or anything on the teeth. Being the dork that I am I just assumed that the drill point was the mark and lined up on it. The auxillary shaft sprocket has this same mark and nothing on the teeth also, so it wasn't like I used the wrong sprocket. After lining up the cam to be at TDC and making my own mark I found out It was 2 teeth off!!! I lined it up right, put it back together, fired it up, set timing to 6 degrees @ 550 rpm, and took it for a ride...... WOW what a difference!!! I can actually take off from a stop sign without feathering the clutch, and it accellerates when I step on the gas without it wanting to cough, choke, and die! I was wanting to get rid of this car but now all I wanna do is drive it! Thanks so much for all your help guys!
