I'm pretty sure I have read about this somewhere, the 4cyl shaft being shorter than the v8 keeping the shaft from going into the pilot bearing. When I built my car I didn't know the trans was from a 4 cyl car. It's been doing fine for years, but recently it started getting a vibration around 2500-3500. Our drivetrain tech said he thought it was the pilot bearing. Sounded logical since the trans had the shorter shaft. Pulled the trans and the pilot (roller type) looks perfect and there is no wear on the shaft. When I looked up a v8 shaft on e-bay, it stated that it has 23 teeth and is 9.3 inches long. The shaft I have has 19 teeth and is 9.75 inches. Now what? I was thinking that the shafts were interchangeable but.....?? Anyone have a v8 shaft they can get some measurments from? :P
the v8 and 4banger input shafts are not interchangable.... the main difference is the tooth count which you found already..... the diameter of the input is the other difference... it can be machined down to the proper size for a 4 banger though for cheap......
Yea mine is a 4 banger trans behind a 5.0. Might not even be the problem. I think I will pull the clutch and bolt the bell up and take some measurments.
This link gives input shaft dimensions for the Ford T-5's.

Thanks old thats what I needed. Looks like the pilot end of the shaft is .008" too small for the v8. Hmmmm........now would be a good time to put a turbo 2.3 in this car and put the 5.0 with a v8 trans in the Cruisin Wagon........ 8)
I believe that the (somewhat inelegant) solution to using a 4-cylinder T-5 behind a 5.0 is to use the Ranger 2.3 DIESEL pilot bushing/bearing (but don't quote me on that!).
Mike
haha well it's a mis-matched pile of parts all thrown together so I may as well add some diesel parts to it! Thanks Mike, I'll look into that. :)
The diesel ranger pilot looks to be a perfect match. And....the local Advance Auto has one in stock!! Thanks for the info everyone :)
asking a similar question, i want to buy a t5 from a 1995 5liter, the trans has the bellhousing on it. does anyone know if it will be cable or hydraulic clutch folk and if it will bolt up to my 67 289???
thanks for the help!
Fehrion,
yes it will bolt up. patterwise. watch the sn95 parts though. 94/95 they are kinda a redheaded stepchild as it is the new bodystyle before the went mod motor so it has some peculiarities. i believe it has a unique bell length to push the trans back so you might need a specific driveshaft and it may change shifter placement. should be a hydraulic clutch too.

What's the part number? I'm debating running the 5.0 trans I have with a 2.76 rear gear in Callisto.
I have a 95 t5 in my 65 mustang. The input shaft had to be changed to the shorter 93 and older, bell wont work, you will also need an older one.
