When I bought my 77 pinto wagon it was missing parts so I had to find them at a junkyard. When put all the parts together and charged the battery the car backfired through the carb. Now I tried adjusting the timing belt but that didnt help. When my pinto gets running it backfires through the carb and gets gas all over the hood. I have replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil, and anti-freeze.When I would adjust the timing belt either way it would do the same thing and I am about ready to give it away so can someone please tell me how to fix my problem.
Check the distributor sounds lke you are 180 degrees out of time, this is a pretty common mistake I cant tell how many times I have done it!
If the distributor checks out okay, try running a compression check to make sure there isn't a burned or hanging valve.
How's the choke on the carb? If your carb is out of adjustment or has a bad chocke it might act like that.. Not 100% sure, but just an idea.
I had the same thing happen to me a while back. and now the underside of my hood is black. my distributor was off just a little. I rotated the distributor enough so that the car would run, and then set the timing. I need to check it again soon, because the carburetor's been popping when I'm trying to start it.
