Title: In the fuel tank mounted pump
Post by: The Whistler on May 20, 2005, 10:40:15 PM
I am wanting to mount my fuel pump inside of the fuel tank in my 72 pinto. I want to know has anyone tried this before and had success? Any ideas or pointers are welcome!

I don't see anything stopping you from doing that, just tossing in a new circuit and relay for the pump... Although you'll need a fuel pressure regulator and to run a fuel return line. Otherwise you'll just horribly flood the carburetor anytime the pump is activated.

However, I'm assuming you're talking about putting the electric pump on a carbureted motor(be it a 2.0L or anything else).

It would be a good idea, although I don't know your ability or time constraints as far as this project goes. But good luck man and post up the results of it.

Sorry I did not state that the in tank pump was for EFI. I know most People mount the fuel pump external. But I not know of anyone who has put the pump inside of the tank for an EFI application.

Ok. I see, I just buttuMEd too much there.

But I don't really see anything that would keep you from mounting the pump in the tank. Except for the fuel filter, if it mounts before the pump in the external application. But to fix that problem you could just use a sock-type filter in the tank on the pump and push the fuel through a secondary filter.

That just makes sense in my head though, as far as applying it in the real world, who knows.

But Holley makes an in tank pump with filter screen and all, I caught a glimpse of that in the newer Summit I got a couple of weeks ago.

I am at this stage right now with my 78 2.3 turbo swap my local rad and gas tank shop said it won't be a problem to stuff a pump and filter in the pinto tank  and then I can install a inline external  filter . External pump  might be alot cheaper though.

I just mounted mine on the outside of the tank using a factory '83 turbo coupe pump. It's also the same fuel pump that fuels a later model 460 truck.
