Title: Pinto Camshaft
Post by: Runabout80 on May 20, 2005, 03:36:47 PM
Well, I was wondering if anyone out there might know the lift and duration for the stock 2.3L cam?

I want to do a little baseline comparison between stock and a couple of other camshafts I found for sale in the Ford Racing Parts webcatalog.

Thanks, looks like my perspective cams are quite an upgrade... All with a lift of .404" and .420" should be a fun build with my old 2.3L

Let us know how the cam works out for you.  Will that cam work without doing any mod???  If it works for you I would like to put one in my stock 2.3.                    THANKS TIM ;D

Good luck, whatever you do though dont use the old followers on a new cam.  The lift on the cam you are looking at, are they giving you the figures for the lift at lobe height or valve lift? the figure i gave you is the actual height of the cam lobe itself, not how far the valve lifts.

Some companies use actual valve movement which is the lobe height multiplied by the rocker or follower figure, ( 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 etc.)

So .2437 lobe height times  a 1.6 follower = .38992 lift at the valve.   if your figures on the new cam are valve height you aren't getting that much bigger of a cam.

You should be able to go upto a .480 to .500 lift, without doing a bunch of mods,  but you should go with stiffer valve springs on any cam upgrade.  Whoever you buy the cam from should be able to tell you what springs you would need.

  Hope this helps.

Yeah, I think my cheap 2.3L top end build up might turn into something a little more.

Might use my 2.3 head and try some pocket porting and gasket matching tips my roommate taught me. But if I can leave the bottom end alone with a new cam and some head work, I could probably hit a nice HP number to let me have some fun while I build my nice 302.

Lift at Cam is .244 Intake and Exhaust and .415 at the valves for the Crane piece I was looking at.

H-270 Cam Grind (http://www.cranecams.com/?show=browseParts&lvl=2&prt=5&Vehicle_Type=Auto&Cylinders=4&Engine_Make=FORD&Year=1980&Engine_Size=2300%20C.C.&partNumber=194611&partType=camshaft)

Those figure will only work with 1.7 rockers, not the 1.6's your pinto probably came with.
with a .244 grind your only.0003 bigger. be cheaper just to but a set of 1.7's and use your old cam.

Well that does sound much easier and cheaper to do... I'll have to check that out, how much do you think a new set of followers would cost me?
