??? I've got a steering problem. When I pulled the car out last year from storage the steering was loose real loose like 1/4 to 3/4 turning back and forth to keep the steering wheel straight, the car goes straight but the steering is slopy. Any help would help. ???
check the steering nuckle,(steering shaft betweeen firewall and the steering rack, there is a rubber bushing that joins the two shafts) my buddies '71 just let go on him this year! Luckally it was in the driveway being pushed at the time.
??? is this a easy fix or do I pawn it off and pay BIG bucks.
well, make sure thats what the problem is first! Get someone to sit in the car and turn the wheel back and forth, you get down below or beside the car an look at the joint. If its making poping sounds or looks like its loose thats probably it. We...ah...Magivered his, but i wouldn't recomend that (we took out the rubber and rivet things and bolted it together) Its still not good, hes gonna have a new knuckle made up from one i got him from work (Ford) If thats the problem look for one at the wreckers.
??? We were thinking how about a u-joint set up like on the street rods ;D
Yes that will work also, but don't just toss something together, take the time to fit it right, make sure its in there secure and do alot of stationary turning in the driveway (puts more strain on the joints than when its moving) to be sure its gonna stay together! God forbid that ever come apart while your flyin down the highway! Jeff
Motormite makes the steering coupling that you are talking about. You can get them at most auto parts places for under $10
