I have a 2.3 with a 5200 2v carb, when running it seems to be a bit retarded, have not checked timming with a light yet but looks pretty good, eyeing it. The carb seems to sound like it is really sucking air, almost starving. I am a newbie on here, and have not worked on one of these engines for a good 20 years. Any thoughts on why it is sluggish? Also, the manual I have does not list this but the cylinder numbers, are they 1234 from the front back? And lastly, the distributor has three wires from it to the control box, there is supposed to be a plug on the end that mates the wires properly. When I got it they were disconnected, and no plastic connector on the wires from the distributor. Can anyone tell me the colors to match to what colors? The three wire to the box, and the three from the dist. do not match. The manual I have shows it but no indication on the mating of the wires. Even a picture of the plug with the wires running in would help, they still have the blades just the plastic has come off. Thanks in advance
The cylinders are 1234 from the front to the back. Is your 5200 v2 crab made before 1976 or after? If it was built after 76 try to adjust the electric choke. When was the last time the Pinto had a tune up? Buy the way, I have the Haynes and Chilton manuals and they seem to cover everything that I have needed to know. Good luck Tim
It is a 77 engine, the power loss is when it is warm, would the choke cause that? There is a lot of wires off of the ecu,and the others are a mess. I have a haynes manual, just not to keen on the electrical!
Hello, power loss when its warm, Have you done a compression check? Maybe the head gasket is going. What does the exhaust look like? Is the carb original or has it been rebuilt? Need more info,Tim
Ok after driving it a bit more, it does not seem to be when warm, just at higher speeds, and loads. It does great in the first few gears then in 3rd and 4th just seems to lag. I can drive it all day long around the neighborhood in 1st and 2nd, just seems to lose power above that. No smoke, idles great, oil looks good, no oil leaks anywhere ( not used to that been dealing with VW engines for years!). I have not rebuilt the carb, did disassemble it and cleaned it out. Also there is another outlet on the carb, from the manual it appears to be a bowl overflow. What hooks up to this? There is another fuel line from the fuel pump that is plugged, does this act as a return?
Sometimes when you have bag plug wire(s) it will only show up under load. how old are the wires?
Not sure of their age, I did find a set with it that was cut up? Not sure why they had been cut, but they were under the seat in pieces.
