Title: Rear End Gear Identification Tag
Post by: racer29 on May 12, 2005, 05:20:17 PM
I just purchased a 1978 Pinto equiped with a 6 3/4" rear end. I pulled the tag off of the rear end housing to see what my gears were. What number is the gear ratio? I would think it's the number on the right bottom corner, but the number is 221c. Is there a 221:1 gear ratio or do I have to translate the numbes/letters on the tag?

Those are not the correct numbers.
Look your tag again The ratio is there
Usually the first digget is partially smashed by the retaining bolt.

The Tag Has 4 Sets Of Numbers/Letters. The Upper Left Corner Says WGF   K, The Upper Right Corner Says 7KD, The Lower Left Corner Says 18    6   7, And The Lower Right Corner Says 221 C. Any Help From That? The Car Is An Auto. In Low Gear It Will Do Up To About 35 Or So Comfortably And 2nd Gear Goes Until 50 or 55. Drive Seems Like An Over-Drive. Please Help Me.

Hello Racer29,
the Lower left corner is where to look.
You have a 3.18 rear axel the 3 has been squished by the mounting bolt. LQQK close you will see a 3.
Hope that helps.

Thanks a million. I have been working on these cars for years now, but in the racer form. Things are a lot differnt when you are making one a street car. I've never worked with the 6 3/4" rear end. I really like the web site and will be becoming a member on payday and can't wait to get my window sticker. Do you know who to contact about being in the 2006 calendar? Between my racing teamate and myself, we have 4 street legal Pinto's and 2 Racers. We would like to take a picture and have it on the website and hopefuly the calandar. I have submitted pictures for the gallery, but they never made it up. I don't know what happened.

Well, thanks for the info and I can't wait to be a member of your group. I used the 2005 calendar for Christmas gifts. They are great. Keep up the good work.
