Hey all
After several years of work my 1980 Turbo pinto is going!
And man is it strong!!
1986 Mustang SVO Engine stock rebuild, Turbo Joe wiring harness, PE computer Stinger header full 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust .82 AR turbo and a 5.0 Nitrous Kit!!!
In the rear we have a 9 inch posi 3.50 ring and South side machine lift bars modified to fit the pinto from a Mustang II
This project has been really fun
I can't wait to take it to the track and test it out
Paint will come in the fall, and probably a c4 and 4.11 ring
Thanks
Another view
sorry
Thats nice!
I'll second that for sure. Clean install for sure.
Congratulations! I hope that my project comes out as nice. Please keep the group posted on your updates.
Thanks guys!
I had to cut the upper intake down by .750 inch to make the hood close!
I gutted, ported, polished, and rotaed it 90 to the front, a Spearco intercooler cools all the hot air down!
I will get some more pictures up in the next few days want to wash and wax her before I show all angles!
I currently have the timing at 8 degrees I was little affraid of the NOS but I have a MSD BTM mounted in the cockpit so I can retard it on the fly if I need to!
Is 11-12 too aggressive with a turbo? Remember I am new to this!
10 is the factory setting but I can retard on the fly so I can play with it.
There is a bunch that went itno this it was pretty straight forward but it took a ton of time!
The rear is a 9 inch from a 65 mustang it is a perfect bolt in I did upgrade 5 lugs on all fours, 11 inch disc brakes on all corners.
Suspension is fully rebuilt with energy suspension poly both front and rear.
Radiator is an all aluminum 65 Mustang 289 piece.
If you have any questions or comments let me know.
I will be posting much more to come.
Dave
your installation loooks real good. I have a question though, you said.....
"..... a Spearco intercooler cools all the hot air down!..."
I am very interested in where (and from whom) you got the SPEARCO intercooler. Please let me know here on the site or via personal message. Thanks
You will love the nitrous.
We had a 50 shot on a 2.3T and it was
worth 107 and almost 130 lbs ft.
I do not know the make or model of the intercooler
It came used off of ebay off a Japanese Go fast that was wrecked
I just measured it and it fit the hole
Dave
Very clean looking install! I bet that car will be loads of fun. Enjoy!

I am going to play with the timig tomorrow if the weather is nice!
I am also seriously thinking about taller gears I have 3.50 in there now leaning to 3.89 or 4.11 3.89 seems as it may be a great all around gear
It should be a blast
Future plans involve a volvo b234f converted head on my other engine
Thanks
Dave
8 degrees would be a good spot to start, keep your total timing @ 20 at the max torque/rpm, I don't run the stock ECU so I'm not sure how much control you have of timing, but the timing should come down to whatever rpm you get max boost then start working back higher. prob makes no sense.
Very nice setup, looks nice and clean!
ok moveed timing out to 10 its surely stronger I originally had it at 8 due to the NOS
I have a MSD BTM mounted on the dash I turned it up to 2 (making it exactly the same under boost) retards it 2 degrees
I slowly worked back down to 0 on the BTM meaning its at 10 under boost and NOS all seems fine!
I just got a nice set of fomoco 3.89 gears and another c7AW case putting 3.89 ring under it next 3.50 are great with the OD but the 3.89 should be quicker out of the hole!!!
As soon as my center caps arrive I will wax it and take pictures for you guys
I will probably be planting my garden this weekend weather permitting so it may be a week more
Thanks for all of the positive comments
Dave
That engine bay looks really clean, especially for an EFI turbo motor. I was going to ask about the radiator but I see you've already said it was for a 65 Mustang 289. How well does it fit height-wise?
radiator is perfect hood closes no problems!
Nice, I'll have to look into those when I go to buy one then.
OK I took a half hour yesterday to mess with the pinto!
I put the 150 jets fromthe 5.0 kit in the system
Lets just say THIS 2.3 DOES NOT LIKE that massive amount of Juice!!!!
80 jets going back in TODAY
Under load it was very violent!
I figure if I am going to break this it should be In October so I have all winter to get it back!
It is a real blast on the street, these turbos are different from anything I have ever had.
It has a .82 AR turbo so the boost is only on at 3-5k rpm, it actually drives like a 2.3 pinto!
Touch the NOS and it is a totally different car instant power from NOS plus BOOST!
I am a little torn on gears I have 3.50 in the rear and am thinking about what I should try in the rear or leave it be?
Any thoughts?
Dave
im running 355s with a 28" tire and like it ....
OK I cleaned it up and took it to a local crusie in this weekend here are some more pictures!
Please let me know your input
Enjoy!
This is what hides in the trunk!!!
Here is a closer view of the Vintiques Aluminum magnums and the Torino center caps, Granada Magnum caps would have been perfect, but if you think pinto parts are tough to find Granada centers are equally as tough!
This is the rear view and a close up shot of the axle, it is a 9 inch from a 65 hipo car, 3.50 ring on a 4 pin posi, the car has 11 inch disc brakes on all 4 corners!
Just another question, this car needs paint but when the paint arrives I also need some worn parts!
Does anyone re-pop the rubber parts like weather stips and the trunk seals?
I also will need the guides that fill the doors for the windows on the sides somone opened this car with a "slim jim" and ripped it out I can take a picture if anyone is confused any parts avaialable please PM me
Thanks again guys
Dave
Free horsepower = get rid of the Flowbastard looking
thing I see lurking in the rear veiw photo. Turbos hate chambered mufflers.
I have seen over a 17 hp increase with a muffler change
on the dyno. It was midrange and upper rpm.
Racer 99
What would you suggest?
It IS a flow-master it is a stainless 2 chamber (40 series I believe)
Power is what I am lookig for
I am open to any suggestions but an open pipe can not be a choice ;)
Thanks again
Dave
No open pipe but a straight thru type.
Borla,Hooker Maxflows,I use Dynomax
Bullets.
im running a bullit on mine, its kinda loud but has a good sound,,, on dads we have a magnaflow on it.... it sounds nice and has a straight through design....i might go with the magnaflow in the future..
heres a quick one of the bullit muffler

HiPopinto, all of the rubber parts you can buy from Steele Rubber including the window sweeps or check on eBay. And yes get rid of the Flowmaster...
ok
Well the way i built it a muffler swap should be pretty easy!
I will give it a try
I am driving it more and feeling the car out if you know what I mean!
I have come to the conclusion that the 3.50 gears are probably a really nice choice
I do think my turbo may be a bit large when i finally get boost its an animal! but boost isnt on in full force (15 lbs or more) until 3500 rpm you are flying in 4th at 3500
If I put a .63 AR factory turbo i should have boost on lower rpm
Currently it has a .82 AR
Remember this is without the NOS as soon as you hit the button the game changes boost is immeadiate at all rpm levels
I will not mess with this until winter as I want to drive it and enjoy it all summer and early fall, but if i deicde to get the turbo rebuilt i would like it ready
Maybe my .63 with the bigger compressor housing off of the .82?
Any input would be awesome
Thanks again
Dave
.48 or .63 without the gas with be
more enjoyable on the street.
Keep the .82 for on the jug as you
will need the increased a/r when you
hit the button.
is the .48 bad with the manual? I know it will have boost quickly but will it choke it? Just thinking
Dave
The .48 will be insta-spool and the .63 will
be a little later. I would go with the .63 on
a stick car.
ok
so the .48 could possibly raise my exhaust gasses to the dangerous level for temp?
There is more science to these than just bolting stuff together
Again thanks for all the help
Hey on a seperate note if you guys are into other cars this is my other project!!
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=666882&highlight=320+auburn (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=666882&highlight=320+auburn)
I have had the hots for these since I was a kid finally got around to starting on the project
Its cool also but as always pintos are my first love
My friends think I am sick with all these cars
I also have a 1973 Super Beetle convertible (wifes Car) and a 1931 ford 5 window coupe! Both are 100% original and in really nice shape
Thanks again
Dave
i am mimpressed with that Auburn project you have going on. keep me posted on that one please!
SRT
I will keep you posted
The Auburn has been my dream car for years but even if I HAD 250k to just spend I would not buy a car!
Heck for 250 k I could buy 100 pintos in GREAT shape
I do have a question for you though
I have a Pangra front end I was debating putting on this pinto
Would you do it?
My Pinto needs paint, and I figured while it was at the shop maybe install the front end?
I have another Pinto on the radar It is also a 1980 totally stock clone twin to this car only Yellow with Black interior Manual steering brakes and trans
I was debating putting my 289 in that one, I built the 289 in 1992 it is a dual quad Holley on a Shelby repop intake 13.0 compression coupled to a Close ratio 4 speed
It too would be a slick ride but I have a bunch of projects going on I need to have the Auburn finished before I start another
That Auburn is a way off but it should be well worth it, That is the first Straight 8 I have ever messed with, Those are really cool engines
Let me know your thoughts on the Pangra front end
I may need to pick your brain on the head light assembly I am missing the lever to raise and lower, also looking for a pangra console if you know of any
I have a console from a piinto black which would match that other on the radar perfectly
Just rambling
Thanks
Dave
Update all:
I just got a .63 AR Garrett off Ebay totally rebuilt just never ran!
It has a Larger compressor housing just as the .83 I have on there now, just a smaller hot side
The mounting on the exhaust flange is a little different, still 5 bolt just a little off of factory ford pattern.
I am going to try to so if I can redrill my exisitng downpipe flange and make it work for both, if not I will need to make new exhaust pipes on hot side.
This will make swapping between turbos a snap, but it may be wishful thinking!
The good thing is the compressor side is a match so cold side plumbing is AOK and a direct bolt up!
Thanks
Dave
Ok guys dumb question
I am 6'3" tall and. An. Of get under this dash
Where do I find the flasher?
I have no turn signal on right side need to switch it out
Duh I am sorry about this
Any help would be great
Dave
If the flasher is working on the other side,it isnt the problem.
Losing a turn signal or brake light problems that aren't bulbs or the switch usually means the turn signal switch is bad. I had no brake lights or left turn signal on my '74 & it was a bad turn signal switch. Had a '69 Dart with issues & changed that switch & it solved the problem.
ok i will try to locate a turn signal switch!
I plan to get the turbo on the car this winter really enjoying this thing!
Thanks
Dave
I had the same problem. You have to remove the steering wheel and it's the plastic part that your turn signal lever screws into. You could have dirty contacts or the plastic may be broke. It's still available new but aftermarket.
The so called replacement part requires rivets for the switch. Just try EBay for the whole thing.....Note the switch was used for many years of Fords just ensure you do not get stick with the long wiring connector version....It will work but it's not the right part.
Ok all update:
I just installed the small turbo!
Let's just say it is night and day!
This thing comes on strong 5 lbs at 1500 and in 4th I push the throttle and it gets to 10 lbs in no time flat
I think the small turbo was a great choice
One thing I can say is that you do feel it flatten out on the top end
With the nitrous it gets you there quick but it seems to just quit climbing which is fine for a street car!
I can see the big turbo will still be here but for the track!
I will keep you all posted
Dave
Hey I forgot to ask if my Pangra front end will fit the 80 body with no major surgery
Any input?
Dave
It has been a while but I am still modifying this car!
I recently bought a fully built C4 and torque converter
It features a full roller trans set up TIG welded torque converter with bearings in place of the bushing
It also is full manual with reverse manual body
Brian Knaub of BK tire broiler built this for me he really knows his stuff when it comes to these transmissions
It will go in right after Christmas I will keep you all posted
Dave
You do realize you will need a 2.0 or 2.3 bell for the C4.
The 2.0 bell will need step dowels, the
There is another option but it is more work.
Yes I do!! I have one already!
I had acustom torque converter built as well
One question is there anything I will need to just bolt this in?
I am going to pull the tranny I have in there shortly and get this up and in
I am hoping it helps I am pretty sure it will
Thanks again
Dave
