I have a 1980 Pinto Squire, with a 2300 4 cylinder engine and auto trans, equipped with air conditioning. This appears to be a vacuum operated sysem. My problem is that neither the air conditioning or the heater systems want to work. What would be the most likely problem? How can I trouble shoot? If I need expert help is there a shop in the Seattle area that would be familiar with the Pinto systems. If the proble is the control unit and I need to buy a unit that fits in the dash area, does anyone have one in good working condition, and if so what would be the asking price? Any help/information would be appreciated. It gets hot in the eastern Washington area and I sure would like a working air conditioning system.

Have you checked to make sure you have vacuum to the controls? It's possible the vacuum line isn't connected. I too have a 1980 squire like yours but I've removed everything and installed a V8 under the hood. I'm just trying to remember where the vacuum lines were routed. If you happen to need that control I have the one out of my car and I know it's in good working condition. The vacuum line should be connected to the intake manifold and go across the firewall to a one way check valve. From there it goes through the firewall to the control panel. Also at that point on the firewall it goes from the check valve to a vacuum canister. A leak anywhere in the system will stop the doors from working properly. I'd give all the vacuum lines a once over to make sure everything is ok.
