I am looking for a lexan windshield for my 74 wagon. Anyone using one? Where did you get it? Needs to be 3/16 inch thick.
Thank's, Brian
Lexan can be picked up at your local home improvement store. Be prepared though it's EXPENSIVE (over $100/sheet here) Once you get it you clamp it flush to the body & trace inside the windshield frame ... cut it 3/4" larger than the marks & you should be in the ballpark. Doing it this way should even allow you to use the factory seals & trim. One good lexan tip... don't remove the plastic covering untill it's completely in place. The Pinto has a simple curve to the windshield, making Lexan an easy swap. Not street legal... but effective on the track
Thank's for the info, I'm not worried about street legal I am bracket racing the car, it is completely gutted by the previous owner. Did they have 3/16" thick lexan, I have found 1/8" but not 3/16". Thank's again.
My business (Werksberg Products) make flush mounted PC front windows for Pintos.
But I use 1/8" PC usually but I could do a any thickness at an added cost.
These are precision pre-cut so you don't have to do any trimming to install. They are oversized to the window opening, then I cut a custom back bevel that overlaps the window opening around 1/4", it has predrilled rivet holes in the bevel area which you just tape into place, drill the rivet holes, remove and clean any shavings.
The PC window already has a inside border line drawn on it for you to easily cut the film, remove the film and paint it black. Let it full dry for a day and peel the insdie back maybe an inch, cleco or tape back into place and use med. length all alum rivets. Pull all the rest of the film off and plastics wax it, you are done!
Also full Fiberglass skin body kits too.... JM werksberg(nospam)@sbcglobal.net
PS: If you want to see some of my workmanship, get a Hot VW's magazine and if a drag race car in there has riveted in or stock type PC windows, 95% of the time I made them.
Also if you saw the latest Herbie Movie I did those, Monster Garage VW episode and this season ending ACVW Community Hurricane Relief vs Hondog ADA Pink's show which will be a 1 hour special and you have got to see what happen to believe it!
When it comes time to clean your Lexan, go to a parts store, or maybe the place that sold you the glass, and buy a can of "PLEXUS". It is designed just for lexan and works very well. I think it is about $10 a can, but well worth it.
Plexus is ok, but the best is called "210" spray. Mostly just Plastic supply houses sell it. It not only cleans the PC scrathes, but also is anti static & anti fogging too!
How much for a can?? Or whatever it comes in. May want to try it out.
$8 to $10 but try your local plastics warehouses as USPS does not allow aero spray items mailed and UPS shipping is a ton more....
Here's an inside shot of the Pinto PC front windshield lip with the line for for you to cut and paint black:
Close up fitting with the pre-drilled holes too, but the only draw back is you have to cut and use a stock fender to (or custom make one) a gap filler:
