Title: Pop Out Quarter Windows
Post by: JohnW on September 26, 2011, 11:13:07 PM
What's involved in adding pop out windows to a runabout or sedan?  If I can get ahold of some, is it like installing a window normally?

Special glass, and window gasket, and the super hard to find quarter window hinges.

Good luck finding them, I know that just about everyone here wants them but they are more scarce than an easy to do good paying job with benefits, in today's economy.

IF you can track them down, I would assume the pillar the glass mounts to needs to be notched on the inside channel for a hinge similar to the station wagon's center pop out windows, but don't take my word on it.

I think there are two people on here that have the pop out windows, I believe one of them is pintogirl and she would be able to give more accurate information on this than I. Not sure who the other person is, if there is even another person.

i have a set in my '73 and yes really really hard to find i found mine in a junk yard and had the chrome trim repolished yes the hinges are the hardiest of all to find  i may have an extra set but will need time to confrim that i remember finding two pair in the yard i was at and grabed both pair they are different from each other the pair i used used the hidden hinges and the other pair have the spring type hinge that mounts to the inside of the pillar and has a pillar cover to hide the mounts i do not have the cover for that (i do but i am using it).
if i find the other pair i will let you all know
good luck if you find some in the meantime

They're that hard to find?  I guess I'll have to start looking for junkyards that have Pintos - I've only found one hatch in my area.  Most places around here scrap cars that old.  Was it an option that wasn't ordered often?

pintoman1: Let me know if you dig up the other set and want to part with them.

I do have a set, but sadly they are not for sale. I am saving them for spares for my 2 Pintos that have pop outs. Both my Pintos have the style that mounts via pop rivot to the inside of the pillar. Those would be the easiest to mount if you want to ad pop outs. There is just a metal tab the window attaches too and that tab also attaches to the pilar.

I have never messed with the other style. The kind that go into the pillar. Most I have done is cut a set of wagon pop outs out. We cut the pillar to see how they mount on the inside of it. I still haven't figured out a way to remove them with out breaking the plastic mount they set in.

Here are few pics.

This is the easier pop rivot style. Can't say for sure but I believe these are 70-73 only. Someone correct me if I am wrong!

The next pics are from a station wagon, but I believe the 74 and up sedans had this style pop out hinge.

That plastic thing is the part that breaks 9 times out of 10 when trying to remove them. Still don't know how to do it with out breaking it, besides cutting the pillar out!

That is the window part.

This is a shot of down in the pillar. The arrow points to the plastic piece that is holding the hinge in place.

Good luck on your search for pop outs. You may want to try Fred Morgan here on the site. He is the parts guru! :D

Kimmy, the ones on the yellow sedan are '71-'72s... by '73 there was only one button on the quarter windows on sedans, Runabouts and wagons. That's why I would about trade a vital organ for a '72 wagon... especially a Grabber Blue Squire.  ;D
