I had a clutch installed at Cottman (or however you spell it) once and when I picked up my car it was like that, and didnt have any reverse lock out, where you have to push down on the shifter to go into reverse. Im pretty sure thats a safety feature and was none too happy after paying so much.
Bet if you look youll see that the metal c clip that keeps that rubber spring pushed down on the shifter is missing. They said it was a spring that went bad but since those long past days I learned a little more, because my shifter would occasionally, well ok a little more than occasionaly :( , just come out of the transmission. I got so good at putting it back in I would just leave it in the gear it was in,pull over as soon as I could where there was light and put it back in and be going again in a minute. After I had to have the transmission replaced I was pleasantly surprised that it never came loose again.
But check that the c clip is on there holding it pressed down,it seems counterinstinctive that keeping it pressed down would keep the shifter pressed up,but it does. If its not the c clip off its probably the rubber corrugated spring maybe split or just worn. Mine was the c clip was missing when I got it back and they just made that excuse of it being a spring that went bad.
I did a write up on my 78 Sedan's shifter modification. I'm using a Mustang II upper shaft and reverse lockout assembly on a Pinto lower shaft/fork and threaded seat.
The Pinto uses a rubber boot which is like a cheap spring which forces the shifter up to keep it out of reverse. The Mustang II shifter uses an actual heavy duty spring and will not wear out. The most common thing about the Pinto shifter is the boot deteriorates or, as tonij1960 stated, the C clip that holds it all down pops out and gets lost.
Here is my thread with some good pictures that describes both the Mustang II and Pinto shifters, as well as my modification to use the Mustang II parts on the Pinto fork for a "closer" shifter knob.

dave thanks a ton!!! for the pics and indeep info, after all that i see my main problem is that i have no c-clip any help locating one would be great!!!
thanks again
eric
Any good hardware store should carry it. I got some from Ace Hardware. Tacoma screw here would have it to. No more than 50 cents a piece.
EDIT: If I had my parts stash easily accessible, I would pull one of the spare shifters out and get a few of the clips for you locally. Ahh, it would be great to have a garage...
went to work today looking around in the old nuts and bolts found a whole box full of c-clips for the shifter!! lucky me!!!
thanks for teh help with out the pics i would still be lost!!!
