Title: Drive shaft play at transmission (front) end
Post by: dave1987 on August 09, 2011, 11:19:03 PM
Could any owners of Pintos with C4 transmissions help me out here? I'm trying to figure out if it is normal to have any play in the drive shaft with it installed and secured.

The reason being, I seem to have some play in the yoke of the drive shaft as it is in the transmission. The odd thing is, I just rebuilt it and put a new bushing and seal in the tail shaft, and it has less than 50 miles on it, I have been neglecting driving it anywhere due to it leaking ATF bad enough to make the car smoke when I get over 35 mph due it ATF being thrown onto the exhaust!

I put a rear seal with the boot on it and it seems not to smoke anymore, but you can clearly see there is ATF dripping out of the weep hole of the boot.

I thought this was covered before but I could be wrong. Something to check is the yoke itself. Make sure it does not have any grooves worn in it. If the yoke is fairly old it may need to be replaced to cure your problem. Didn't you have a vibration issue before?

Yes I did have a vibration issue. There is no where on the yoke from what I can tell, even using a couple different sets of digital calipers reveals no real wear.

Did you get the driveline balanced? You may need to replace the bushing in the tail shaft if you haven't already done so. Other than that it's kinda puzzling.

That's the strange thing. The driveshaft is balanced, i and I put a new bushing in when I rebuilt the transmission less than 50 miles ago.

So the vibration is gone? What did you do to correct it or did it just go away?

Nope. Vibration and atf leak still present.
