Title: Alternator Upgrade
Post by: JohnW on August 08, 2011, 03:40:17 PM
The alternator in my '80 isn't cutting it.  I have a 300W amp and it can't power it.  What can I put in?  I've heard the GM 1 wire amps are really easy to wire up, but they don't bolt in, do they?

I was thinking about this: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/10125/10002/-1?CT=999
Should fit if it'll mount to a pre-92 Ranger 2.3.

But is there a better/cheaper option?  I'm guessing I need around 100W.  Also, what was the stock alternator?  60?  70?

the gm one wire are really close in size the only diff. is that the one of the bolt hole brackets on the alt is shallow, need to make a spacer used old alt, cut the spacer off ford one for gm one.
hope this helps!!

What GM motor/car did you order your alternator for?

So it's a similar bracket, but needs a spacer?  I'm also looking at these now:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/713/8-57140/10002/-1?parentProductId=1558365
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/10122/10002/-1?parentProductId=754001

So it isn't worth the extra 30 to get the Ford specific one?  And I'm assuming on either that I can use my stock 2-belt pulley?

That's what I'm thinking of doing, it's just that this one is a 140 amp and I doubt any stock one would put out that much.  I don't think I need 140 amps though.  I'll stop by the local junkyard when it isn't raining, they've got plenty of Chevy trucks.  What about alternators out of straight 6 or V8 Ford full size pickups?

Do not forget that the alternator in JEGS has an internal voltage regulator not an external one.....So you might have to change the wiring etc... The pulley might not fit also.
