Hello I installed a new set of rotors and bearings. Following the instructions in Chiltons. So I tightened to about10 foot pounds (finger tight) and then a bit more (maybe 1/16 inch) to insert the lock and cotter pin.
There is a small amount of play in the rotor not much just a bit of horizontal movement. Is this normal?
Thanks for all your help.

I have been told no.... by many different sources. Here's what I do... tighten up beyond specs, back off nut, retighten to spec and lock into place. If I feel any play, not tight enough but you also have to be careful not to over tighten, wheel must roll.
hope that helps
for what it is worth. i started in the auto repair business when i was 14 doing brake jobs for my uncle. i exited the auto repair business at age 37. i am now 60 years old
i have never had a bearing go bad with this procedure.
if installing a new set of bearings/races tighten it up until you have no play (this seats the rollers) (grasp the rotor at top & bottom and try to move).
any play?
if so then tighten it up just until the play is eliminated then move the castle nut or cotter 'keeper' to the nearest slot. apply the cotter and away you go.
never had a set fail
Great thanks to both replies I really appreciate it. No matter what you read or how many instructions you have experience always has the answers.
Thanks again
