Hi all!
Yesterday morning on my way to work I experienced a scary moment. While accelerating from a stop to get on the freeway Ruby's engine raced so high that I couldn't even get her into gear. We coasted to almost a stop, with her engine still doing high RPMs, when I tapped her accelerator pedal... and her RPMs went back to normal for idle (she was still in neutral). Does this sort of thing happen with Pintos? It scared the stuff out of me... I didn't know what the heck happened. I don't think it was the floor covers... I'll say it didn't appear to be something catching on my end anyway. :( Thank you.
I had that happen to me once and it kept happening... turned out to be a carb problem, the bottom butterflys were sticking
This may sound dumb... but is there a way to unstick it? It just has the one butterfly. Will tapping the accelerator pedal always correct it, or could it cause more problems? I don't want to burn up this Ford Tough engine.
mine had to be rebuilt, it was a carb for a 2.0L
and it kept happening, you's could be something different but I would look there anyhow, see if it is starting to "stick"
Er... how do you tell, besides a high RPM? Can I manipulate it with my fingers to find out, and isn't there a lubricant that can unstick it?
they start to "stick" because parts are worn out, lubbing it up will not help if thats the problem, sometimes a replacement is required.
consider... butterfly is on a metal rod opening and closing, now imagine the holes the rod goes into isn't "round" anymore and oval instead... it's a terrible way to describe it but that's how I understood it from the guy that rebuilt mine and stopped the problem. I'm not sure exactly what was done, that's just how I remember the description from 2007.
I have a "sticky" cable on my green wagon, when it sticks... can't give it enough gas to go... pedal will only move so far
the high rpm thing was carb related... that was my experience anyway with 2 different issues

that's how my carb guy figured it out, had the carb off and showed me how it would stick
I was thinking possibly the choke. But from everyone else's input on it, it could very well be the carb throttle plates. See if you can get it rebuilt or possibly even find a new one, they are available on ebay quite often.
Oh, and check that choke to! :P
I know O'Reilly's has carbs for a 1.6 for something like $200. I've been looking at Pinto stuff on ebay lately but I'll admit I wasn't necessarily looking for carbs (never thought I would need another one). I do know a trusted Carburetor shop in town here... called Bob's Carbs. I'll see if he can fix it for less than me buying a whole new one. Plus, I like to think that Ruby has her original equipment. Thank you guys. I'll take her to Bob's next week and see what he says. ;D
make sure that no interference is coming into play from an errant hose or some wiring. also, check to make sure that the throttle return spring is present. i'm not familiar at all with the set up that the 1600 used though. it may or may not be similar to the one used on the 2.0.
Good morning Becky,
Sorry to hear about the sticky throttle,it may also be the throttle linkage. The best way to trouble shoot the problem is to remove the cable and pull it back and forth to feel if it sticking. Mine did on the '71 so I replaced it and that solved the problem. They pop up on Ebay sometimes. The other solution is to shoot white lithium grease down the cable assembly, and work it in real good. Then check the carb for a broken/weak return spring. Then I'd look in to the carb(no pun intended),rebuild or replace. I do have some carb's in the garage,PM me if you decide to go that way. We can talk.
Good Luck,
Phil

it was a $300 rebuilt carb I had that sticking issue with, new out of the box! and have had issues with a couple others I bought, paid big bux for... I'll never buy another "rebuilt" from the stores again... have yours rebuilt by a reputable shop if it comes to that.
