Got a question regarding the differences of the exhaust systems on the Pintos on the 2.3 4 cylinder sedan/hatchback models. I know the 77s had a catalytic convertor but did the years prior to that? The reason I am asking is I have a 77 Pinto that I am having to fix the exhaust but it has no convertor. Is the downpipe from the exhaust manifold on pre-convertor cars a different size? Trying to figure out what I can do to fix the car so the exhaust does not fall off the car again.
Thanks for any info!
if i'm not mistaken; i believe federal laws required them on most passenger cars starting in 1974
Heyr4pinto:
Attached is a figure showing the exhaust system and part numbers for
a 1977 Sedan with the 2.3 engine and w/o the catalytic convertor.
Hope this helps.

I think the catalytic converter came along with the requirement for unleaded fuel, which went into effect with 1975 model cars.

Hmmmm... That does help a little. It sucks that the parts aren't readily available so I guess I will have to make something work lol.
I know what you mean, Matt. My 78 needs a new pipe from the cat back to the muffler. Muffler is good but the cat was hollowed out some time in it's past. My down pipe is larger than the cat to muffler though, I am positive of that.
matt, converters started in 76 on pintos.i would think the 2.3 peice from exhaust to converter non converter would be the same. when i looked for a converter fo mine a few years a go i could not find one for a 76 or earlyer though,so something is different. all i could find for 76 was a universal for any car. as a result mine is now hollow.in my area ther is an exhaust shop tht can custom make any part and is usualy cheaper than buying the part and doing it your self.
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. It hasn't been right since the idiot tow truck driver from west virginia ripped it off in 2006 & maintained 100% deniablility. Oh well, it happens. I'll figure it out one way or the other.
do you need an exhaust manifold and down pipe to the converter?
My manifold is good & I got a replacement downpipe from quickrick back in 06 but I was trying to find out if there was one in a slightly larger pipe than what I got. From what everyone said it seems they were just the one size so I will prolly have to see about getting a reducer or something to make it work.
