Title: HELP with steering coupler removal
Post by: Original74 on June 22, 2011, 08:54:19 AM
I have done this repair several times in the past, but remember now that every time I do it, I forget how that bolt securing the top of the coupler to the end of the steering shaft works. I do recall it is not a bolt you remove. I believe you remove the nut, then just push the bolt in from the nut end, not remove it, and the coupler should pull off the end of the steering shaft. The end of the bolt opposite the nut is just round, nothing to put a wrench on.

Am I thinking right? This is the first time I have done it from the bottom, and I will say that is a lot easier than trying to do it from the top.

A gentle jog of my aging memory on that top bolt would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

You are correct Dave.  Just loosen the nut and tap out the bolt as far as it will go and then it should release from the shaft.
